In 1920, Royal Dutch Lloyd opened Lloyd Hotel on IJ-Quay for their passengers. The building became a prison for members of the Dutch Resistance during the Second World War, and was subsequently converted into a prison and then a juvenile detention centre. In 1996, the City authorities launched a competition to turn the building into a hotel. Suzanne Oxenaar and Otto Nan led a large renovation team, working in conjunction with MVRDV. The world's first one-to-five star design hotel opened in 2004. MVRDV developed radical solutions to free the building of its history without burying it. They carved a soaring atrium through its heart, from ground to sixth floor. It incorporates four mezzanine platforms used for exhibitions and events, an art library, and a restaurant, bar and lounge occupying the entire ground floor. Many other artists and designers contributed to the 117 guest bedrooms.
