Cross Gone with the Wind and an early Bond film (think Sean Connery in Dr No) and the resulting style will be something akin to that of Naomi Cleaver’s gorgeous house on the Caribbean isle of Nevis: ceiling fans, white muslin, lush colours and romantic verandas, plus leggy furniture, graphic fabrics and sleek mid-century minimalism. In less capable hands, this bold combination could have been disastrous, but Naomi’s philosophy of authenticity, practicality and indulgence has produced a home that is idiosyncratic yet irresistibly charming, a truly harmonious response to its unique location. The four-bedroom house, with deep, wraparound verandahs and a dramatically zig-zagging external staircase, is what’s known locally as a ‘skirt-and-blouse’ building, made from a stone base and wooden top. A five-minute stroll from an almost-deserted beach and a ten-minute drive to the island’s little airstrip, the property has stunning sunset-facing views over the Caribbean sea.
