This private house, sitting on a stony outcrop above a Sussex beach, is designed to enjoy the sea views to the south and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the other sides. The new house is embedded in the hillside to reduce impact while still taking advantage of the views. Modern design found favour with the planning authority and planning approval was forthcoming without difficulty in this sensitive development site. The introduction of daylight deep into the house was a key factor in making the dwelling feel at one with its rural setting. A series of glazed rooflights and internal walls provide a sense of space and visual continuity throughout the two floors, ensuring that each hour of the day is a unique experience. The design is based on sustainable principles with the timber being sourced within Sussex, microgeneration of electricity and storage of rainwater for re-use.
