The Danish architects COBE were commissioned to design a 2,000 sq m maritime museum on a riverside site at the heart of the small Telemark town of Porsgrunn. The context presented challenges: a quiet neighbourhood of small-scale buildings with traditional pitched roofs. COBE's solution was a contemporary, aluminium-clad building, divided into smaller components to respect the scale of the surrounding architecture. The rooflines are broken, to let light into the interior. The reception and cafe are on the ground floor, with the exhibition area on the first floor.
