Helsinki University Main Library, which opened to great public acclaim in September 2012, is the largest university library in Finland. It occupies the site of a former department store in the heart of the city, and incorporates two stores and a metro station entrance at ground floor level. At the core of the building is a magnificent oval atrium, flooding the interior with light. The interior is calm and dignified: polished pale stone flooring, understated furniture, white walls. Externally, the dense fenestration grid and huge arches give the building a distinct appearance, while finely-crafted brickwork creates a sense of timeless harmony with the neighbouring buildings in Kaisaniemi.
