A new academy for 1,150 pupils developed within an existing school, with approximately 60% new-build and 40% refurbished accommodation. The design respects the semi-rural setting of the academy and avoids the intrusion of new buildings onto the existing playing fields, thus increasing the massing to the eastern aspect of the site. The new-build block addresses several key sustainable issues, including optimising use of natural light and ventilation, and respecting and protecting the existing tree line along the western boundary of the site. 10% of the building’s energy will be generated from renewable sources, including the use of photovoltaic panels.
