A woodcut engraving depicting an Archimedean Screw for raising water. Dated 18th century

Archimedean screw operated by reciprocating rope to give continuous circular motion. The screw is being used to raise water from A to B. The invention of this device for raising water by either a spiral tube wound round an axis, or by a broad screw fitted in a tube, is attributed to Archimedes (c187-212BC) but there is evidence that it was known and used for irrigation as early as 600 BC. Engraving depicting James Wimshurst's static or 'influence' machine. This had two glass plates on which were mounted pieces of brass, the plates revolved in opposite directions. As plates moved, stationary brushes made contact with the brass and received positive and negative charges. Used therapeutically in treatment by Franklinism.

Perpetual motion: A garden fountain worked by water from upper cistern which is filled with water from an Archimedian screw. The screw is driven by a perpetual motion device using a wheel and lead balls. The balls are supposed to force the wheel round as they fall from the inside of the wheel to its outer circumference. Constructed by Lege for the Indian government, it was used for 23 years as a means for automatically calculating the tides at Indian ports, as well as the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Canada.
