Knives, Scissars, and Rotors to Grind 1795 Italy. This engraving of everyday London life comes from a series of 14 paintings by the Royal Academy painter Francis Wheatley. This series of idealized knifegrinders and cherry, match, primrose, and strawberry sellers was also available in impressions with hand coloring. Wheatley, a portrait painter to the aristocracy, came upon hard times while preparing these canvases, but the dual-language print titles (English and French) attest to the wide-ranging appeal of the engravings.. Inspired by a series of ground-breaking Hamlet lithographs that Delacroix had created one year earlier, the younger artist opted for the more linear technique of etching. His expressive conception of form had been learned in Ingres's studio then developed under Delacroix. In the series, key exchanges offer a compressed summary of much of the play, with a final cluster devoted to the tragic conclusion.
