Jimmy, a Bulldog owned by Dr A.D.Waller, takes part in an experiment at the Royal Society, Burlington House, London. With one fore-leg and one hind-leg in separate pots of salt solution connected to Einthoven's string galvanometer, his heart-beat is recorded on a lime-lit sheet, a thread vibrating with each heart-beat. Several ladies in the audience also took part in the experiment, dipping their hands into the saline solution pots, and their hearts were found to be steadier than Jimmy's. Da

Women packing dynamite cartridges, 1888. Explosives factory at, Val Bormida, near Cengio, North West Italy. Nitroglycerin was mixed with Kieselghur (a diatomaceous earth) to produce Dynamite. Patented by Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) in 1867. Dynamite is a more stable high explosive than gunpowder and nitroclycernin and quickly gained popularity for blasting in mining, tunnelling and quarrying.
