Fragments of a terracotta calyx-krater (mixing bowl) ca. 400-360 B.C. Very close in style to the work of the Dolon Painter Obverse, Herakles and BusirisReverse, Dionysos and AriadneDionysos was not only the god of wine, he was also intimately connected with ancient theater. The obverse depicts the popular subject of the Egyptian king Busiris who was preparing to sacrifice the Greek hero Herakles and was overcome instead. The representation probably reflects a satyr play. On the reverse, Dionysos reclines on a couch with Ariadne in an architectural interior that, like the obverse, indicates a stage setting.. Quilt Top, Crazy pattern ca. 1885 American By the mid-1880s, crazy quilts were so popular that enterprising manufacturers offered them in ready-to-sew kits, which often included appliqués. This practice explains the strangely uniform quality of many crazy quilts, and makes those crazy quilts that are not formulaic seem all the more extraordinary. Each block of this quilt top is designed with unusual patterns, and the blocks seem to be composed of real scraps. There are some commercially produced elements, such as the cats and some of the embroidered motifs, which were probably marked with patterns, but the original aspects of this piece make it stand apart from the run-of-the-mill crazy quilts that exist in great numbers today.. Crazy Quilt. Culture: American. Dimensions: 80 1/4 x 80 in. (203.8 x 203.2 cm). Date: ca. 1880-85.Crazy quilts, a fad in the last decades of the nineteenth century, were most commonly pieced from irregularly shaped bits of velvet and silk. This exuberant quilt is far more unusual, since its unknown maker chose to craft it from brightly patterned cottons. The cottons create an album of fashionable, though inexpensive, fabrics of the 1880s, including Egyptian Revival and Japanesque designs, children's handkerchiefs, and pieces of "cheater" cloth--fabric that was printed to imitate patchwork. One of the handkerchiefs, printed with playing cards, is inscribed "ORIENTAL PRINT WORKS, APPONAUG, RI." It is possible that this mill produced many of the fabrics found in the quilt.
