The Adoration of the Magi. The painter Geertgen tot Sint-Jans lived in Haarlem in the monastery of the Sint-Jansheren (the Commandery of the Knights of Saint John), from which he took his name.The three magi represent the three generations and hail from the three continents known in the Middle Ages: Europe, Asia and Africa. They are paying tribute to the newborn baby Jesus.

Known in the Christian Bible as the Adoration of the Magi, this vivid scene depicts the Virgin Mary, mother of Christ, sitting in a ruined palace with the baby Jesus in her hands. The Three Kings (the Magi) have come to Bethlehem to honour the child. They are dressed in their finest clothes. The kings, having removed their crowns, kneel and kiss the Christ's hand. Each bears a gift: gold, frankincense and myrrh. Joseph stands in red in the back.

Oriental carpets more than two centuries old have rarely survived and are rarely represented in Islamic Art since Sunni Islam (and to a lesser extent Shia) eschews representational art in favour of precisely the repetetive geometric symbols and arabesques found, for example, in oriental carpets. This means that most examples of 17th century and earlier oriental carpets, mainly produced in Muslim lands, are only to be found in paintings from Christian lands where rich oriental carpets were associated with wealth, power and taste. Such carpets featured as an important decorative feature in paintings from the 14th century onwards, leading to the dichotomy that there are more depictions of oriental carpets produced before the 17th century in European paintings than there are actual oriental carpets surviving from the same period. Because of this European paintings have proved an invaluable source of reference for the study of the history of carpetmaking and carpets.

Christ Appearing to His Mother' by Rogier Van der Weyden, c1496. The scene on the right panel of the Miraflores Altarpiece is the only one in this altarpiece that illustrates two events at once: in the foreground we see Christ appearing to the Virgin Mary, while in the background we can see the immediately preceding event, His resurrection on Easter morning. The artist may have thought it necessary to explain the main scene, which was not often painted. The winding road from the tomb to the building in the foreground makes it clear that Christ went to his mother at once, so that she would be the first to experience the joy of reunion with him. The Adoration of the Christ Child possibly 1496-1502 Workshop of the Master of Frankfurt Netherlandish The newborn Christ Child, encircled by an adoring group that includes his mother and father, shepherds, animals and angels, lies naked in a manger. Adoration scenes, many influenced by the visionary account of Saint Bridget of Sweden (ca. 1303 - 1373), were painted for the open market in Antwerp. This picture, unlike other extant examples associated with the Master of Frankfurt and his workshop, does not depict the scene under the night sky, a feature that reduces the dramatic effect of the scene. The Birth and Naming of Saint John the Baptist; (reverse) Trompe-l'oeil with Painting of The Man of Sorrows ca. 1514-15 Bernard van Orley Netherlandish This panel once formed the left wing of an altarpiece dedicated to Saint John the Baptist that was commissioned by abbot Jacques Coëne for the Benedictine Abbey Church in Marchiennes, near Tournai. It depicts Saint Elizabeth in bed, shortly after giving birth to the newborn saint. Zacharias appears at the entrance to her room, carrying a scroll which declares his sons name will be John. The pendant shows the moment after the Baptists death, when Salome receives his head on a platter. The centerpiece of the triptych, likely a sculpture of the Baptism of Christ, has not survived.. The Birth of the Mary by the Master of the Ashmolean Predella (1350-1400) While her new baby is being washed by midwives, Saint Anne receives visitors in her bedroom. Although the birth of Mary is not in the gospels, it was a popular subject until the mid 1500's.

The Le Cellier Altarpiece 1509 Jean Bellegambe French Saint Bernard, the standing monk seen on the left interior wing, was a reformer of the Cistercian order and a fervent proponent of the cult of Mary. In this triptych he gathers with his family around the throne of the Virgin. The altarpiece was commissioned by Jeanne de Boubais, abbess of the Cistercian convent of Flines, who appears in the central panel in the guise of Saint Bernard's sister, Humbeline, and for this reason wears the black Benedictine habit. Painted in grisaille on the exterior is Bernard's vision of the Virgin, who miraculously wet the saint's lips with her milk.. The Le Cellier Altarpiece 435638
