CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a tow vehicle is used to back space shuttle Discovery out of Orbiter Processing Facility-1 for its move to the Vehicle Assembly Building VAB.The work is part of the Space Shuttle Programs transition and retirement processing of shuttle Discovery, which is being prepared for display at Smithsonians National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va. Discovery will remain in high bay 4 of the VAB until its scheduled transport atop a NASA Shuttle Carrier Aircraft modified 747 jet to Dulles International Airport in Virginia on April 17. Discovery will then be transported to the Smithsonian on April 19.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Viewed from inside the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, space shuttle Discovery, perched on a crawler-transporter in the doorway of the massive Vehicle Assembly Building, is ready for its 3.4-mile journey to Launch Pad 39A. It will take the shuttle, attached to its external fuel tank, twin solid rocket boosters and mobile launcher platform, about seven hours to complete the move.This is the second time Discovery has rolled out to the pad for the STS-133 mission, and comes after a thorough check and modifications to the shuttle's external tank. Targeted to liftoff Feb. 24, Discovery will take the Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM) packed with supplies and critical spare parts, as well as Robonaut 2 (R2) to the International Space Station.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Before dawn, at the Shuttle Landing Facility, or SLF, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, space shuttle Endeavour is ready to be lifted, via the sling attached, away from the shuttle carrier aircraft, or SCA, underneath. The SCA carried the shuttle piggyback from California, where Endeavour landed Nov. 30 to end the STS-126 mission. After Endeavour is on the ground, it will be towed via the two-mile tow-way from the SLF by a diesel-powered tractor to the Orbiter Processing Facility where it will begin preparations for its next mission, STS-127, targeted for May 2009.

This high-altitude research plane, a specially equipped Dryden Flight Research Center ER-2, stops at Patrick Air Force Base long enough for visitors to get a close view. The modified U-2 aircraft, soaring above 65,000 feet, will measure the structure of hurricanes and the surrounding atmosphere that steers the storms movement. The plane is part of the NASA-led Atmospheric Dynamics and Remote Sensing program that includes other government weather researchers and the university community in a study of Atlantic hurricanes and tropical storms. The hurricane study, which lasts through September 1998, is part of NASAs Earth Science enterprise to better understand the total Earth system and the effects of natural and human-induced changes on the global environment

The orbiter is surrounded by work platforms allowing access to all areas of the spacecraft.The work is part of Transition and Retirement of the remaining space shuttles, Endeavour and Atlantis. Endeavour is being prepared for public display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Its ferry flight to California is targeted for mid-September. Endeavour was the last space shuttle added to NASAs orbiter fleet. Over the course of its 19-year career, Endeavour spent 299 days in space during 25 missions.

At Cape Canaveral Air Station's Complex 5/6, a Redstone rocket lies broken on the pad after Hurricane Floyd passed along the East Coast of Florida, Sept. 14-15. The complex, now dismantled, was the site of the first manned launch May 5, 1961. At a weather tower located between Shuttle Launch Pad 39A and Launch Complex 41, the highest winds recorded during the superstorm were 91 mph from the NNW at 4:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15. The maximum sustained winds were recorded at 66 mph. The highest amount of rain recorded at KSC was 2.82 inches as the eye of Hurricane Floyd passed 121 miles east of Cape Canaveral at 4 a.m. Wednesday. A preliminary review of conditions at the Kennedy Space Center was positive, however, after the worst of Hurricane Floyd passed. There appeared to be no major damage to NASA assets, including the launch pads, the four Space Shuttle Orbiters, and flight hardware

This photograph shows the Saturn V assembled LOX (Liquid Oxygen) and fuel tanks ready for transport from the Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The tanks were then shipped to the launch site at Kennedy Space Center for a flight. The towering 363-foot Saturn V was a multi-stage, multi-engine launch vehicle standing taller than the Statue of Liberty. Altogether, the Saturn V engines produced as much power as 85 Hoover Dams.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - A model of the Sierra Nevada Corporation, or SNC, Dream Chaser spacecraft stands next to a plaque honoring the final landing of space shuttle Discovery on the 3.5-mile-long runway at Kennedy Space Centers Shuttle Landing Facility. Dream Chasers program manager, Steve Lindsey is a former astronaut who commanded Discovery on its final mission, STS-133. SNC announced it plans to work with United Launch Alliance, or ULA, to launch the Dream Chaser spacecraft into orbit atop an Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in November 2016 intends to land the winged spacecraft at the Shuttle Landing Facility lease office space at Exploration Park, right outside Kennedys gates and process the spacecraft in the high bay of the Operations and Checkout Building at Kennedy, with Lockheed Martin performing the work.
