In the crypt (9th-13th centuries) are ceiling and wall paintings of angels, the Evangelists, and various other saints in medallions; votive frescoes of Saints Dominic, Augustine, and Anthony Abbot; and the tomb of S. Domenico. In the fourth and fifth crypt chapels is a fresco cycle by the Salimbeni brothers of the martyrdom of St. Andrew. The church interior is heavily restored, with modern nave piers and capitals. Displayed in the sacristy are salvaged fresco remains, a wooden statue of Christ (17th century), and paintings. Maternity 1784 Benjamin West American West was a prolific painter of historical scenes and a tireless draftsman, but seldom did he lavish such care on a drawing as he did here. For West, this work is unusual for its allegorical subject, Caritas (Charity), or Maternal Love, whose long tradition was briefly revived in the late eighteenth century, prompted by the popularity of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's writings on the mother's primary role in childhood education. The remarkable delicacy of both contour and modeling, as well as the thin paper bearing this image, suggest that West made the drawing as the basis for an engraving, though no corresponding print is known.. (14.4 x 21.9 x 1 cm). This forty-two-page sketchbook contains drawings by the history painter Peter Frederick Rothermel of scenes in Genazzano, Italy, forty miles east of Rome. He documented the local architecture, sculpture, landscape, and people, while also including sketches for narrative subjects.
