In Greek legend, Paris was a Trojan prince, the son of Priam and Hecuba. When Eris, the Greek goddess of discord, was not invited to the marriage of the Greek leader Achilles, she threw a golden apple into the festivities, with the words 'for the fairest' written on it. Date: 1566-67.Based on the attributes of the figures, the subject matter of this composition has been identified as a gathering of the Classical gods Apollo, Mercury, and Pallas, accompanied by the muses, as well as by the allegorical figures of Prudence and Fame. The flying figure of Mercury at upper right, with caduceus in hand, injects diagonal movement to the asymmetrical group of recumbent figures around the music-making Apollo at upper left. He often made large compositions by working spontaneously on the paper, mixing different media to create an almost rough appearance that greatly enlivens the scene. Here, supported by angels and surrounded by putti, God appears to Jacob, who kneels on the ground accompanied by his two wives, Leah and Rachel, and two infants. Within this expansive landscape, the artist included a classical temple at right and fragments of architectural elements on the ground at left.
