Tiraz Fragment 10th century This linen fabric is inscribed with a repeating inscription, al-Mulk Lillah, “Sovereignty is Allahs”, block printed in a black outline, which was then gilded. The kufic script employed is a simple geometric one, except for the floriated flourish in the last letter of al-Mulk. The simple fabric and technique employed, as well as the lack of a name implies that this fabric was produced for general sale in a market. Many such fabrics were eventually found in a burial context, as their inscriptions were believed to convey baraka (blessing) through the sustained contact between the deceased and the textile.. Tomb KV9 in Egypt's Valley of the Kings was originally constructed by Pharaoh Ramesses V. He was interred here, but his uncle, Ramesses VI, later reused the tomb as his own. The layout is typical of the 20th dynasty - the Ramesside period 1145 BC

The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in a series of twelve caves around the site known as Wadi Qumran near the Dead Sea in the West Bank (of the Jordan River) between 1946 and 1956 by Bedouin shepherds and a team of archaeologists. The practice of storing worn-out sacred manuscripts in earthenware vessels buried in the earth or within caves is related to the ancient Jewish custom of Genizah. 408 BCE to 318 CE. Dead Sea Scrolls (also Qumran Caves Scrolls) are ancient Jewish religious, mostly Hebrew, manuscripts found in the Qumran Caves in the West Bank near the Dead Sea.

Cast of the Flood Tablet 19th century, after 7th century BCE original This object is a modern version of the so-called Flood Tablet, a cuneiform-inscribed clay tablet which is an account of the deluge featured in the Epic of Gilgamesh. It was not cast from an ancient tablet but rather from a nineteenth-century interpretation based on multiple ancient fragments. Assyriologist Paul Haupt made the modern tablet in clay, basing its size and shape on an example held in the British Museum and reconstructed from several fragments (K.2252 + K.2602 + K.3321 + K.4486 + Sm1881). The original was part of the Library of Ashurbanipal (r. ca. 669-631 B.C.) at his palace in the Assyrian capital, Nineveh, in northern Iraq.The decipherment of the text caused a sensation in the late nineteenth century because of its similarity to the Flood story in the Book of Genesis. Palm leaf manuscripts are made out of dried palm leaves. They served as the paper of the ancient world in parts of Asia as far back as the fifteenth century BCE, and possibly much earlier. They were used to record actual and mythical narratives in South Asia and in South East Asia. Asgiriya Vihara, the Monastery of the Horse Mountain’, was built by the family of Pilima Talauve in the early 19th century, on a plot adjoining the ancient royal cremation ground. The Asgiriya Vihara is a rather smallish, inconspicuous temple, but as one of the seats of Goyigama religious power, of great significance. From the early 19th century onwards, during the Esala Perahera, the sacred Tooth Relic would be deposited for the last night of the festival at the Asgiriya Vihara. Together with the Malwatte Vihara, it is also one of the wealthiest temples in Sri Lanka.

Medinet-Habu 1854 John Beasley Greene American From 1852 to 1855 Greene, the first photographer-archaeologist to work and travel in Egypt, concentrated his studies and excavations at Thebes and Deir el-Bahri. At Medinet-Habu (Thebes) he cleaned important inscriptions. This photograph represents a corner of a second courtyard of the temple and depicts the last eighteen lines of the inscription of the year 5 of the reign of the Ramesses III, recounting with effusive praise the king's victories over the peoples to the north.Whether or not we can decipher the writing upon the wall, the message of Greene's picture is clear. In the penumbra behind the massive pylon is the story of a perished people preserved in stone. The velvet shadows of this eggplant-colored print make tangible the millennia between Ramesses' glory and that less distant moment when the young archaeologist contemplated the chronicle he had exposed.. Moses ben-Maimon, called Maimonides and also known as Rambam (Hebrew acronym for 'Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon'), was a preeminent medieval Jewish philosopher and one of the greatest Torah scholars and physicians of the Middle Ages. He was born in Cordoba, Spain on Passover Eve, 1135, and died in Egypt (or Tiberias) on 20th Tevet, December 12, 1204. He was a rabbi, physician and philosopher in Morocco and Egypt. Although his writings on Jewish law and ethics were met with acclaim and gratitude from most Jews even as far off as Spain, Iraq and Yemen, and he rose to be the revered head of the Jewish community in Egypt, there were also respectful critics of some of his rulings and other writings particularly in Spain. Nevertheless, he was posthumously acknowledged to be one of the foremost rabbinical arbiters and philosophers in Jewish history, his copious work a cornerstone of Jewish scholarship.
