Panel with a youth grasping a tree; winged sun disc above ca. 8th century B.C. Assyrian This ivory panel was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. Like many other panels from the same storage room, it was part of a chair or couch back or the headboard of a bed. Twenty pieces of furniture were discovered stacked in orderly rows in this room, where they had been stored before the destruction of the Assyrian palaces in 612 B.C. Shown here is a beardless male figure with a mass of curled hair, probably a youth. He wears a robe with fringed hem that is belted at the waist, and strides forward with both arms extended to grasp the tendrils of a plant. With his left hand, he raises a drooping stalk of the plant toward a winged sun disk with a pair of hanging volute forms. Donation stela: Apries offers land to Bastet 589-570 B.C. Late Period, Saite From the Third Intermediate Period through the Saite Period a large number of stelae are preserved that, like this one, record the donation of land to temples. These give an unusually rich view into temple and land organization. Most often non-royal persons actually made the gift, and the gift was probably destined for the support of the donor's funerary cult. The donation was generally made through an intermediary somehow attached to the temple and who must have derived some benefit for his agency. For reasons of decorum, usually the reigning king was depicted as the official donor in the scene at the top. Probably because of the nature of land development, almost all such stelae relate to areas in the north of the country.While King Apries is depicted as the offerer, the four lines of hieroglyphic text record the donation is made by Padeset son of Padenebetsekhet and is to be administered by Pedubast son of

Incised cosmetic box fragments with a warrior and four women ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian These slightly curved, incised ivory fragments were found in a private house abutting the town wall at Nimrud. Originally, they probably decorated a pyxis, a small round box used for cosmetics, which may have been salvaged from one of the palace complexes at Nimrud after they were sacked during the final defeat of Assyria at the end of the seventh century B.C. Circular holes drilled through both pieces likely helped to secure the ivory with dowels to the interior of the pyxis, which was perhaps made of wood and has not survived. Because they share motifs and images with the monumental stone reliefs that lined the walls of Assyrian palaces, ivories with incised decoration like this one have been attributed to an Assyrian style. The building is unique because its 'double' design meant that there were courts, halls, sanctuaries and rooms duplicated for two sets of gods.
