Bes standing on a papyriform capital, Beset on opposite side 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Bes and his wife Beset appear on opposite sides of this element. Bes is nude and has his typical semi-leonine countenance and protruding tongue. Beset holds the same stance and also wears a feather crown, but she has a less animal-like and less exaggerated face, and is clothed in the so-called Isis-garment, knotted between her breasts, that comes into use in the Ptolemaic Period.Beset is a much older figure, but becomes particularly popular in the Ptolemaic Period. Basically she shares Bes's protective and apotropaic functions.Figures of Bes sometimes appear on independent columns, on the handle of a sistrum, or of a mirror. Female figure (otua fefine) Early 19th century Ha'apai Islands Whale ivory figurines, from the Haapai Islands of Tonga have a sculptural power that belies their modest scale. Almost exclusively female, the images are referred to as known as otua fefine, a term used to describe prominent female ancestors who were venerated as divine beings. This striking example was carved from the creamy core of the polished tooth of a sperm whale. The figures honey-colored patina was achieved by smoking the figure over smoldering sugary tubers from the ti plant (Cordyline fruticose) and then rubbing with oil. Not only did this accentuate the ivorys natural grain (giving it a rich reddish color which was an important element of its aesthetic), the resulting shimmer of the surface conveyed something of the essence of divine, sacred light. By 1600-1500 BCE, early Olmec culture had emerged, centred on the San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan site near the coast in southeast Veracruz. They were the first Mesoamerican civilization, and laid many of the foundations for the civilizations that followed.

Date: 380-362 B.C..The name of the man represented is not preserved, but he proudly asserts his attachment to Nectanebo I by placing the king's cartouches at the head of the texts on the back pillar. The slightly greenish flocked stone is associated with the site of Saft el-Hina, and, indeed, the left side of the back pillar figures an address by the deceased to the priesthood of the temple of Sopdu, confirming that the statue stood in the ancient city of Per Sopdu, modern Saft el-Hina. Per Sopdu was located at the eastern edge of the Egyptian Delta and at the western end of the Wadi Tumilat that connects the Nile valley to Sinai near the Red Sea. Ptolemaic Period The inscription on the back of this figure refers to Queen Arsinoe II as a goddess, indicating it was made after 270 B.C. when her cult was established at the time of her death in by her brother and husband, Ptolemy II. Gilding indicating divinity once covered her face, and traces still remain at the edges of her neckline. While the overall frontal pose and disposition of the limbs in this small statue follows Egyptian traditions, the cornucopia the queen holds is a Greek divine attribute, and her corkscrew are strongly associated with Hellenistic traditions in Egypt. Features of the depiction - the small Cupids bow mouth and the large rounded eyes - are also elements from Greek style. Pataikos Amulet ca. 1070-664 B.C. Third Intermediate Period This elaborate Pataikos amulet depicts a male dwarf with a winged goddess on his back. His bow-shaped and bent legs stand slightly apart. Each foot rests on a small crocodile that faces straight at the viewer while the reptiles body curves towards the back where the tails of both animals meet and overlap. The right foot and right crocodile are only partially preserved. The dwarf is naked and his genitals are shown below his protruding belly. His short arms are slightly bent and each hand rests on his stomach while firmly grasping a knife that is painted black. On his head he wears a tight cap. It is topped by a three-dimensional scarab-beetle, which is painted black as well.The dwarf is shown three-dimensionally. On his back, but with a small gap in-between, is a winged goddess that is represented two-dimensionally. She stands upright and is facing right. The garment hugs the contours of his arms and buttocks and has a stiff upper edge along the back of the neck, a feature that occurs with some regularity on this garment, but one with an unclear meaning. He holds the royal crook and flail with his hands poised asymmetrically. The craftsmanship of the piece, despite its small size, is intricate, with delicately but clearly rendered striations on the crown feathers, a defined chin strap and beard, a detailed broad collar, and the decorated crook and flail. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Osiris, foremost of the Egyptian funerary gods and ruler of the underworld, stands upright and wears an atef crown with a sun disk on top and ram horns below. His facial features are sensitively modeled with plastic brows and thick, heavy eyelids. His close-fitting mummiform garment has a shallow stiff upper edge along the back of the neck, a feature that occurs with some regularity on this garment, but one with an unclear meaning. His hands and wrists, complete with bracelets, extend out from curved slits in his garment. He holds the royal crook and flail with his hands poised asymmetrically. In general, Osiris statuettes were some of the most abundant temple offerings in Egypt by the first millennium B.C., reflecting both the gods importance and changing cult practices that spurred the wide-scale dedication of deity statuettes. Shabti of the Adoratrice of Hathor Henettawy, wife of Painedjem I Third Intermediate Period ca. 1064-1055 B.C. This small figurine is a shabti from the burial of a royal woman named Henettawy who lived during the early 21st Dynasty at Thebes. During this era, control of Egypt was divided between the kings in the north, who ruled from Tanis in the Nile Delta, and the High Priests of the great state god Amun, who controlled the southern part of the country. Henettawy was a wife of the High Priest of Amun and King Painedjem I, who ruled from Thebes. She was also the daughter of a king, likely either Ramesses XI or Smendes (Nesbanebdjed) I.In the ancient Egyptian belief system, shabtis were avatars of the deceased who could be called upon to perform manual labor on his or her behalf in the afterlife. By Henettawys time, as many as 401 shabtis (a worker for each day of the year plus an overseer for each 10-day week) were included with the burials of wealthy people. Worker shabtis like this

Nursing woman ca. 2420-2389 B.C. or later Old Kingdom This woman sits on the ground with one knee raised. Against the hammock of cloth formed by her skirt stretched over her knee she holds a child whose yellow skin indicates she is a girl. With one hand the woman holds the child's head, while with the other she offers her breast to the child. The child's head is tilted back, either to gaze at the woman as nursing children may do, or perhaps in frustration as she cannot reach the breast. Behind the woman a red-painted and therefore male child kneels and pulls her second breast beneath her arm so that he can nurse, too.Among Old Kingdom serving statuettes, women with children are a non-standard subject; indeed this is the only example depicting nursing. Serving women with children are seen more often in reliefs: in one tomb a child clings to his mother's back while she grinds grain, and nearby another woman nurses a child while she tends baking bread. Wooden examples like this one are rarely preserved because of their susceptibility to ground conditions and white ants, but must have been very numerous.Isis' eyes were originally inlaid, and the tenon on top of her head would have fitted into a separate crown of probably gilded wood or metal. Ptah 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period This statuette depicts Ptah, the chief god of Egypt's capital city Memphis and master craftsman of the gods. He is easy to identify by his tight-fitting cap, straight beard (different from the usual curved divine beard on other gods), and enveloping garment. Inlaid gold draws out his features and adornments. The space around the eyes as well as the cosmetic line, rather than the eyes themselves (which is more common), are inlaid with gold, as are his eyebrows and lustrous broad collar. Three deep incised bands on the beard likely would have been inlaid as well. His garment has a stiff upper edge along the back of the neck, a feature that occurs with some regularity also on Osiris statuettes, but its meaning is unclear. A large triple strap suspension loop sits below this ridge. A shallowly carved oval area on his chest brings his hands and scepter into sharper relief, and may be intended to represent slits in the cloak itself. Commonly Ptah
