Third Intermediate Period Egyptian blue was a synthetic pigment used most frequently to add color to objects composed of other materials, or for small objects such as scarabs. It was occasionally also used for larger objects, such as this small sculpture representing Amun, of which only the head remains.The god Amun ("the hidden one") began to rise in importance early in the Middle Kingdom. He became more prominent over the course of the second millennium B.C., and beginning in the New Kingdom was seen as the king of the Egyptian pantheon. His cult continued to gain significance over the first millennium B.C. as well. Nebethetepet or Nehemetaui 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Nebethetepet is shown standing in the long, form-fitting dress typical for many goddesses and wearing a sistrum as a crown. Nebethetepet was a Heliopolitan goddess, the female counterpart to Atum in the creation of the world. The sistrum, a musical instrument used in processions and rituals, alludes to her associations with the goddess Hathor, with whom the sistrum was closely related. Representations of Nebethetepet in copper alloy are rare as her cult was not widespread, although statuettes have been found at multiple sites including Sais, Memphis, and Saqqara. Head of a Queen Wearing a Vulture Headdress ca. 1550-1479 B.C. New Kingdom This serene looking queens rank is identified by the vulture headdress she wears, although its head now missing. Her delicate features and slightly elongated head indicate that she must date before the Tuthmoside period, but parallels are scarce. It is difficult to identify where in the prior one hundred or so years before that familys rule begins she belongs. Overseer Shabti of Nauny ca. 1050 B.C. Third Intermediate Period Seven shabti boxes were interred with Nauny; five came to New York in the division of finds (30.3.26-.30), two of them are now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. All are made of sycamore wood and have high ends and flat lids. A white stucco wash was applied after the lids were closed. The shabtis, made of faience, were packed tightly in each box, in an upright position. They are of two types: foremen and workmen, with a ratio of one forman to ten workers (see 30.3.28a-h).. Head of an Osiride Statue of Hatshepsut ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom Four Osiride figures of Hatshepsut stood in the corners of the sanctuary of Amun in her funerary temple at Deir el-Bahri. This head, which wears the Double Crown symbolizing the union of Upper and Lower Egypt, belonged to the figure in the northeast corner. Head and Shoulders of a Sphinx of Hatshepsut ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom This fragmentary sphinx represents the female pharaoh Hatshepsut. Portions of six granite sphinxes were discovered during the Museum's excavations in the area of Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri in Western Thebes. A nearly complete example (31.3.166) is on display in gallery 131. This sphinx still retains substantial blue paint on the royal beard, traces of yellow paint on the pleats of the nemes-headcloth, and small amounts of paint around the eyes.A smaller sphinx in a different style is also owned by the Museum (31.3.94).. Canopic Jar Representing the Deity Imsety. Dimensions: H. 28 cm (11 in); diam. 15.5 cm (6 1/8 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 18-20. Date: ca. 1550-1070 B.C..Canopic jars were made to contain the organs that were removed from the body in the process of mummification: the lungs, liver, intestines, and stomach. Each organ was protected by one of the Four Sons of Horus: Hapy (lungs), Imsety (liver), Duamutef (stomach), and Qebehsenuef (intestines). Beginning in the New Kingdom, canopic jar lids were usually carved with heads that identify these four protectors: the baboon head is Hapy, the human head is Imsety, the jackal head is Duamutef, and the falcon head is Qebehsenuef.This jar, with its human-headed lid probably held the liver and was under the protection of Imsety. Canopic Jar of the Overseer of the Builders of Amun, Amenhotep Made 1427 BCE-1400 BCE Egypt. During the mummification process, the liver, lungs, stomach, and intestines were removed from the body, separately mummified, and stored in the tomb in four vessels, called Canopic jars. Each organ was placed under the protection of a deity whose head often appears on the stopper of each jar, however the head on this jar depicts the deceased man, named Amenhotep, for whom it was made. Statue of Seated Imhotep. Dimensions: H. 14 cm (5 1/2 in.); W. 4.8 cm (1 7/8 in.); D. 9.8 cm (3 7/8 in.). Date: 332-30 B.C..Imhotep was the official who oversaw construction of Egypt's first monumental stone pyramid, at the beginning of the Third Dynasty (ca. 2650-2600 B.C.). The significance of this accomplishment made such an impression on the Egyptians that Imhotep was remembered and honored in later Egyptian history. Beginning in the New Kingdom he was invoked as the patron of writing and wisdom, and by the time this statue was made he had achieved fully divine status, with his own mythology and cult. Imhotep was also invoked for his intercession in sickness and infertility, and he was later equated by the Greeks with their own god of medicine, Asklepios.Imhotep is almost always depicted with short-cropped hair or a cap, seated and holding an open papyrus scroll. In this example the finely inlaid figure of the god is made separately from his elaborate chair and base. The chair is
