Nestorius developed his Christological views as an attempt to rationally explain and understand the incarnation of the divine Logos, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity as the man Jesus Christ. He had studied at the School of Antioch where his mentor had been Theodore of Mopsuestia; Theodore and other Antioch theologians had long taught a literalist interpretation of the Bible and stressed the distinctiveness of the human and divine natures of Jesus. Nestorius took his Antiochene leanings with him when he was appointed Patriarch of Constantinople by Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius II in 428. Nestorius' teachings became the root of controversy when he publicly challenged the long-used title Theotokos (Mother of God) for the Virgin Mary. He suggested that the title denied Christ's full humanity, arguing instead that Jesus had two loosely joined natures, the divine Logos and the human Jesus. As such he proposed Christotokos (Mother of Christ) as a more suitable title for Mary. Nestoriu

Illuminated Psalter late 1100s Byzantine Literacy was highly prized in Byzantine state, with its sophisticated secular and clerical elite proving to be enthusiatic patrons of the book arts. This manuscript, one of the approximately fifty so-called aristocratic psalters that survive from the Middle Byzantine era, demonstrates the high quality of that period's book production. The text is elegantly written in gold letters on parchment, with vibrantly colored illuminations set against gilded grounds at selected readings. The iconlike illiminations assist in making the Old Testament text relevant for Christian use. Thus, God, to whom the Psalms are dedicated, is depicted as Christ Pantokrator at the center of elaborate headpiece over the introductory text (illustrated above). The illuminator has painted the face of Christ, the "world ruler" (pantokrator), in the finest Byzantine tradition, layering flesh tones and facial details over a green base color meant to represent shadows. The pairs

Nesiamun's Book of the Dead ca. 1070-945 B.C. Third Intermediate Period Said to have been discovered in a tomb on the west bank at Thebes, this funerary papyrus would have been an important element of the burial equipment of the owner, the priest Nesiamun. The deceased is shown in the vignette on the right, offering incense to a figure of the god Osiris, who is seated before table piled high with offerings of food and drink. The text on the papyrus, written in black ink with titles highlighted in red, includes several spells from the Book of the Dead (Chapters 23 to 28 and 162) that were meant to enable Nesiamun to speak, to know magic formulas, to maintain control over his memory and his heart (the center of emotions and thought), and to provide his head with warmth..
