Old Assyrian Trading Colony Kültepe, the ancient city of Kanesh, was a powerful and cosmopolitan city located in northern Cappadocia in central Anatolia. During the early second millennium B.C., it became part of the network of trading settlements established across the region by merchants from Ashur (in Assyria in northern Mesopotamia). Travelling long distances by donkey caravan, and often living separately from their families, these merchants traded vast quantities of tin and textiles for gold and silver in addition to controlling the copper trade within Anatolia itself. Fragmentary marble inscription ca. 425-424 B.C. Greek, Attic Following the Greek victory over the Persians in 479 B.C., Athens formed a naval confederacy with other Greek cities around the Aegean Sea. Gradually, however, it became an empire exacting annual tribute for the benefit of Athens alone. This inscription is part of a tribute list recording payments to Athens by members of the confederacy. It lists the assessments of Paros, Naxos, Andros, Melos, Siphnos, Eretria, and Thera. The date is 425/424 B.C., and the amounts are high because Athens was combating Sparta in the Peloponnesian War.. Double-Sided Tombstone 10th century and dated A.H. 646/ A.D. 1248-49 This marble tombstone is carved on both sides: on the side on view, a Qur'anic verse (Sura 3:18) is inscribed in robust kufic script, characteristic of the Fatimid period. More than two centuries later, the stone was reused, again as a tomb marker. It was inverted and carved with an inscription that includes a death date of 1248-49, framed within an arch on columns with rosettes in the spandrels and a lamp suspended from its apex.. Stela Fragment with Glyphs 4th-9th century Maya This is a fragment of the bas relief known as Tortuguero Monument 6, which contains one of the most infamous and contentious hieroglyphic texts in the Classic Maya (ca. a.d. 250-900) corpus. For many years epigraphers and lay enthusiasts honed in on the final passage of the text as a "prophecy," a tale of what would have happened on the date 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahaw 3 K'ank'in in the Maya calendar. This corresponded to a day in December 2012, leading to spurious and sensational claims about an end of days predicted by the ancient Maya. The Met's fragment contains a pivotal portion of the text. The main event of the Tortuguero Monument 6 text is the ritual dedication of a building, quite possibly a mortuary structure, on the date January 11, a.d. 669 (9.11.16.8.18 9 Etz'nab 6 K'ayab). A local lord of Tortuguero, calling himself "Lord Jaguar," burned fire for the first time in the structure on that date, activating it as a ritual space. Throughout

Date: ca 1186-1070 B.C..Ostraca (plural for ostracon) are potsherds used as surfaces on which to write or draw. The term is used, by extension, to refer to chips of limestone, which were employed for similar purposes. Despite their humble appearances, ostraca bear a wide range of images and texts, including administrative documents, literary texts, and depictions of royal and divine figures. The texts were mostly written with reed pen and ink of two colors, red and black, and inscribed in Hieratic, the cursive script of ancient Egypt throughout most of its periods.
