Bust of Isis by Joseph Cott (1786-1860). The head is a copy of one in the Sala dei Busti of the Museo Pio-Clementino in the Vatican. The Vatican bust has been acquired from Cardinal Albani's collection and published as representing the Egyptian goddess Isis, on account of the lotus-shaped central curls, it is now regarded simply as an ideal female. The English sculptor Joseph Gott worked in Rome from 1822.

Thus, the inscription on the base was undoubtedly intended to legitimize her claim. Her nom de plume Philopatria, which she adopted for her acclaimed "Essay on Government" of 1808 (she was also the author of anticlerical tracts), appears on the back. Marble portrait of Marciana, sister of the emperor Trajan. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: H. 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm). Date: ca. A.D. 130-138.During the last quarter of the first century A.D. and the early decades of the second century A.D., ever more complex hair arrangements were developed for the ladies of the imperial court. Hairpieces with added hair and concealed frameworks formed high diadem-like structures surrounding the face. One of the most elaborate constructions appears on the official portraits of Marciana, the elder sister of Trajan. The high polish and engraved eyes on this head suggest that it was carved during the Hadrianic period. The powerful women of Trajan's family were much honored by his successor, Hadrian, who is said to have owed his throne to their influence. Marciana was the grandmother of Hadrian's wife, Sabina. He stands draped in a tunic with shallow vertical folds. It stretches tightly around his body, arms and legs. Over the tunic is what appears to be an outer tunic that falls to the waist. Marble bust of a youth ca. A.D. 140 Roman The bust may be seen as a funerary portrait. The unusual addition of the lions skin, associated with the semi-divine Hercules (Herakles), between the bust and the circular base probably signifies the parents wish to glorify their son. Moreover, he is unclothed in a heroic manner. The youth is portrayed as an older boy but his features are still childlike. When acquired by the Museum a century ago, the bust was heavily covered with accretions and was long regarded as authentic. However, after radical cleaning in 1984, the antiquity of the bust was questioned, and it was removed from display. Recent study and re-evaluation, including the identification of the marble as coming from a quarry not far from the city of Aphrodisias in ancient Caria (present-day Turkey), have prompted the sculpture to be reinstated.. Partial female head 400-200 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Small Late Period and Ptolemaic reliefs or sculptures that depict a subject in a partial or unfinished way but are themselves finished objects constitute a special class of object. Guidelines like those for artists are often prominently exhibited as part of the object, although, in fact, many instances can be noted where the object simply could not serve as a suitable model for a traditional formal Egyptian representation. Personifications of kingship, figures that may represent the now emerging demigods Imhotep and Amenhotep Son of Hapu, and popular gods like Harpokrates or Isis, are heavily represented within the corpus. Taken together, the figures represented and the other features indicate the reliefs and sculptures of this class, sometimes called by Egyptologists "sculptors models / votives," were the material of a donation practice, perhaps connected with the prolific temple building of these centuries.
