Limestone funerary stele (shaft) surmounted by two sphinxes last quarter of the 5th century B.C. Cypriot Elegant sphinxes are positioned back-to-back with their heads turned so that they could be seen in three-quarters perspective. The calm beauty of the creature's head, the form of the palmettes, and the egg and dart molding that decorates the base of the platform are typical of Greek art of the fifth century B.C.. Niche with the Seated Bodhisattva Shakyamuni Flanked by Devotees and an Elephant. Culture: Afghanistan (Hadda). Dimensions: H. 16 9/16 in. (42 cm); W. 18 1/4 in. (46.4 cm); D. 10 in. (25.4 cm). Date: ca. 4th-5th century.The lunette embellished the high base of a Buddhist stupa (relic mound) and would have been viewed from below during ritual circumnambulation. Shakyamuni is shown as a bodhisattva wearing the jeweled turban and textiles of a prince. The naturalistic anatomy and the complex classical treatment of interacting devotees seem remarkable given that the relief was sculpted about the fifth century--long after classical traditions in the West had declined. The Bassae Frieze comprises a series of relief marble sculptures from the Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassae, Greece. It was discovered in 1811 by Carl Haller and Charles Cockerell. From the style of the frieze it belongs to the High Classical period, probably carved around 400 BC.

Base of a dedication in Marble. Found in the Athenian Agora. Base of a dedication for victories in the mock cavalry battle contest. Three sides of it have reliefs depicting a horseman riding toward a tripod. The inscription on the fourth side supplies the names of the victorious dedicators and also that of the sculptor Bryavis who carved the monument. It will have supported a bronze tripod dedicated by the victors. Middle of the 4th century BC.

Bronze plaque of Mithras slaying the bull mid-2nd-early 3rd century A.D. Roman The cult of Mithras was very popular throughout the Roman Empire and was followed especially by soldiers. It was one of several eastern cults that spread rapidly as a result of the pax Romana (Roman peace); others included the worship of Jupiter Dolichenus, Manichaeism and, of course, Christianity. Shrines dedicated to Mithras have been found at sites as far apart as Hadrians Wall in northern Britain and Dura Europos on the River Euphrates in Syria. This plaque may well have decorated the wall of such a Mithraeum (place of worship). Busts of Sol (the Sun) and Luna (the Moon) watch over the ritual scene of Mithras slaying the bull, aided by a dog, snake, and scorpion. Nessus Abducting Dejanira modeled 1814-15, carved 1821-23 or 1826 Bertel Thorvaldsen Danish In early-nineteenth-century Rome only Antonio Canova rivaled the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. One area in which the Dane was the acknowledged master was the independent relief; a contemporary critic termed Thorvaldsen the "patriarch of the bas-relief." While these tended to be small scale, compact, and restrained, in emulation of the ancient compositions that Neoclassical artists revered, this one is unusual for its large size, bold plasticity, and sensual subject. The well known myth concerns the centaur Nessus's betrayal of Hercules' trust: charged with carrying Hercules' wife across the river Euenus, the centaur tries to abduct her but is slain by a poisoned arrow shot by Hercules. Against a severe background the sculptor chiseled the dramatic moment when Deianira waves to her husband for help as her abductor twists to kiss her.
