Plaque with Scenes at Emmaus ca. 850-900 Carolingian Among the finest ivory carvings in the Cloisters collection, this plaque depicts Christs appearance to two of his disciples after his Resurrection. Christ, who is distinguished by his halo, meets the disciples along the road to the town of Emmaus, near Jerusalem. As described in the Gospel of Luke (24:13-35), although not recognizing Christ, they urge him to stay in town with them. Once within Emmaus, they finally recognize him as he breaks bread for their shared evening meal. Judging from the horizontal format and the recesses along the top edge to accommodate hinges, this plaque once served as the back panel of a small coffret. Greek, Attic The ashes of every Athenian who fell in battle were returned to the city and buried in the state funerary ground in the outer Kerameikos at the northwest edge of the city, just outside the walls. The grieving family might also erect a stele--usually with a battle scene--in its own burial precinct to honor the fallen soldier. Furniture plaque carved in relief with a cow suckling a calf. Culture: Assyrian. Dimensions: 2.36 x 3.86 in. (5.99 x 9.8 cm). Date: ca. 9th-8th century B.C..During the early first millennium B.C., ivory carving was one of the major luxury arts that flourished throughout the ancient Near East. Elephant tusks were carved into small decorative objects such as cosmetic boxes and plaques used to adorn wooden furniture. Gold foil, paint, and semiprecious stone and glass inlay embellishments enlivened these magnificent works of art. Based on certain stylistic, formal, and technical characteristics also visible in other media, scholars have distinguished several coherent style groups of ivory carving that belong to different regional traditions including Assyrian, Phoenician, North Syrian and South Syrian (the latter also known as Intermediate).Several ivories in the Metropolitan Museum's collection are from the Aramaean town of Arslan Tash, ancient Hadatu, in northern Syria just east of the

Marble stele (grave marker) of Phainippe ca. 400-390 B.C. Greek, Attic An inscription identifies the deceased as Phainippe. She holds a mirror in her left hand while the servant girl before her carries a casket and a small box. The servant's dress, with sleeves but no belt, reflects an eastern style that places her origins in Thrace or Asia Minor. The ingredients of this scene are the same as those on the many classical vases showing women at home. A central tabula bears an inscription identifying the deceased, and six bilateral fields, alternately rounded and gabled. These contain, from left: satyriskos sitting on a rock, playing double pipes; satyriskos playing a lyre; satyriskos playing cymbals before a panther; girl dancing with thyrsos; seated Herakles with club and kantharos; dancing satyriskos with flute; dancing satyriskos with syrinx and lagobolon; satyriskos with a drinking cup, astride a mule; Paniskos playing double-pipes; satyriskos placing a vessel on a stand; satyriskos with torch; seated satyriskos playing pipes. Upper Part of a Tabernacle for the Holy Sacrament 1450-1475 Rome. This relief represents the upper of two surviving panels from the altar of the Holy Sacrament in the Roman basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (the second panel remains in the church). Dismantled in 1573, the altar was one of a number of improvements in the church instituted by Cardinal Guillaume díEstouteville, archpriest of Santa Maria Maggiore during much of the 15th century. As his name implies, Isaia came from a family of stone carvers in Pisa and was active in Rome from 1428. He produced a number of tombs and altars there, although the majority no longer survive. Between 1455 and 1458, he collaborated on one of the grandest sculptural projects of the century, the Arch of Alfonso I of Aragon in Naples.. Marble . Isaia da Pisa
