Date: ca. 1353-1336 B.C..Found in the dumps south of the Sanctuary of the Great Aten Temple or in the Sanctuary itself, this fragment is attributed to Akhenaten. The inner corner of one eye is visible alongside the nose. Although there is little to distinguish many representations of the king and the queen, particularly relatively early in the Amarna years, the especially long line alongside the nose and lips and the sinuous upper lip support that identification. The accounts by official court historians and descriptions provided by visitors evoke a vibrant cultural center continually redefined by its leadership through shifting internal and external power dynamics. According to oral tradition, circa 1300, Edo chiefs are reputed to have reached out to the leader of neighboring Ife, Oranmiyan, to establish a new divinely sanctioned royal dynasty. Since then, the investiture of Benins rulers to the title of obas has conferred upon them at once a role of chief priest officiating in important religious ceremonies and presiding over an elaborate structure of palace officials. Assyrian This strip of ivory was probably blackened through exposure to fire when the palace complexes at Nimrud were sacked during the final defeat of Assyria at the end of the seventh century B.C. At the top edge is a triple border made up of a guilloche (a spiral motif formed by a row of connected circles) flanked above and below by stylized palmettes. Below is an eagle-headed winged figure with human body, similar to those depicted on the Assyrian palace reliefs, such as 32.143.7 in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. He faces left and holds a bucket in one hand while raising a cone-shaped form in the other. Below his feet is another triple border of palmettes flanking a guilloche. At bottom, a bull is shown facing left, with head down, forelegs bent, and hindquarters raised, above a stylized scale pattern used to represent mountain landscapes in ancient Near Eastern art. Headless statue of Babaef as younger man ca. 2475-2450 B.C. Old Kingdom The two statues 64.66.1 and 64.66.2 were found in the mastaba of Babaef. They are part of a set of as many as sixty representations of him in alabaster, red and black granite, and limestone. The taut flesh and muscles and the energetic stride of his youth in 64.66.1 contrast with the softened muscles, lost flesh tone, and measured stride of his maturity in 64.66.2. Babaef was a vizier and overseer of all construction projects. He was described as "king's son of his body" and "unique associate of his father," though the king himself is not mentioned by name.. Furniture plaque: wing of a hawk ca. 18th century B.C. Old Assyrian Trading Colony This piece belongs to a group of five carved ivory plaques probably found at the site of a palace at Acemhöyük in central Anatolia. Originally, they formed the composition of a falcon with outstretched wings grasping antelopes in its extended talons. The central plaque forms the head and body of the bird, finely carved to indicate the swelling of the breast, the stylized peregrine falcon cheek markings, and the large eyes with holes for inlaid pupils, now missing. Traces of gilding survive on the eyes and beak. The plaque is discolored with a combination of reddish areas, where iron oxides are present on the surface, and a gray hue that indicates the object was exposed to considerable heat, perhaps during the destruction of the palace. Scans of the surface revealed traces of silver in the more intensely red areas, although it cannot be determined whether this is due to a metal overlay that is no longer p
