Arrows were fitted with heads of varying shape according to their intended use in war, the hunt, or target practice. Arrowheads made for use on the battlefield incorporated different designs intended for specialized purposes such as the piercing of armor or to cause maximum damage to horses and unarmored personnel.Large arrowheads, pierced and elaborately chiseled with landscapes, birds, flowers, dragons, and Buddhist divinities, were created to be admired for the beauty of their metalwork and design rather than for use in archery. Such highly elaborate examples may have been made for presentation or as a votive offerings to a shrine.. Arrowhead (Yanone). Japanese. dated 1645. Steel. Culture: Etruscan. Dimensions: Other: 10 13/16 in. (27.5 cm). Date: late 5th century B.C..Numerous examples of such objects have been found in tombs of Etruscan warriors, and scholars have debated their function. Most thought that they were hooks for retrieving meat from cooking vessels. But the engraved mirror, 96.18.15, displayed in the mirror case shows a figure using the object as a torch-holder. Not a good sign if youre an enemy—it suggests aggressiveness and readiness to act. The sword and bells are also associated with Gu, the god of iron, war, and technology, and in the 19th century they adorned life-size royal portraits to show the kings association with Gu and his authority over life and death. Small welded figures like this one were placed on personal shrines to invoke Gus powers.Bell late 19th century Congolese Single bell struck with a stick, rod or animal horn. Single and double clapperless bells made from forged iron are sounded to send messages, make announcements, and perform divination. these widespread idiophones are called by many different names. Agogo, a term used by the Yoruba and other Nigerian peoples to indicate a struck clapperless bell, is also found in Afro-Caribbean cultures. The bell's timbre is varied by letting it ring freely or by damping it against the chest. Instruments made of sonorous materials (idiophones) comprises the largest and most widespread type in sub-Sahara Africa. Names of identical instruments change from region to region. Some instruments and the music linked to them have traveled beyond the African homeland to North and South America and the Caribbean. Idiophones are sounded by shaking (rattle, sistrums), beating together (iron clappers), or striking (xylophones, slit gongs, bells). they reinforce the rhythmic foundationArrowhead ca. 3rd-7th century A.D. This example is from the western portion of the island of Viti Levu, whose inhabitants formerly created a distinctive variety of davui. A unique feature of Western Viti Levu shell trumpets is the presence of a small finger hole, bored near the mouth of the shell, which allowed the player to vary the pitch when playing, creating a rising and falling tone. Virtually all other Pacific trumpets emit only a single note. In contrast to other Fijian conch shell trumpets, western Viti Levu davui were end-blown, with a blowing hole made by removing the apex of the shell, rather than side blown (using a hole made in the side of the instrument). The accounts by official court historians and descriptions provided by visitors evoke a vibrant cultural center continually redefined by its leadership through shifting internal and external power dynamics. According to oral tradition, circa 1300, Edo chiefs are reputed to have reached out to the leader of neighboring Ife, Oranmiyan, to establish a new divinely sanctioned royal dynasty. Since then, the investiture of Benins rulers to the title of obas has conferred upon them at once a role of chief priest officiating in important religious ceremonies and presiding over an elaborate structure of palace officials. During the fifteenth century reign of Oba Ewuare, Benins armies were formed and the fortification of its capital with a massive wall undertaken. Date: 200 B.C.-A.D. 500.Stone models in the Mezcala style come largely from the present-day state of Guerrero, in southwest Mexico. A particularly long-lived tradition, these works may have been produced over some one thousand years, from as early as 500 B.C. Little is known about their archaeological contexts, and there are few points of reference with surviving architecture in the region. It is possible that these models emulate buildings with stone columns, such as those from Cuetlajuchitlán; alternatively they could recall above- or below-ground funerary structures, in which case the columns would represent wood supports of a tomb or a funerary pyre. Mezcala models may have served multiple functions over time, in keeping with the Mesoamerican custom of repurposing or recarving stone objects. Oblong models, for example, may have been recarved from celts, ritual tools of great symbolic importance. The great majority of Indian and Persian khanjar daggers have smooth hilts and rounded pommels. While there are also many examples with zoomorphic pommels, the majority take the form of a horse's head, or, occasionally, a lion's head. In addition, the animal elements of most zoomorphic khanjar hilts are rendered in a very refined, delicate, and stylized manner. In contrast to this, the carving of the sheep's head on this dagger is done in a very lively, naturalistic, and animated style, giving the hilt an immediate visual appeal as a piece of sculpture. The hilt is marble, which is also unusual, most khanjar daggers having jade hilts. The blade is gently recurved, with a raised medial ridge and a thickened tip that is a flattened lozenge in cross-section.. Dagger (Khanjar). Indian. 17th-18th century. The Jmon people were primarily hunter-gatherers, using arrowheads such as this one to hunt a variety of land animals.
