Tea bowl ca. 1876 Designed by Karl L. H. Müller American Made as a prototype for a porcelain service exhibited at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, this tea set depicts troubling imagery on the finials of the teapot and sugar bowl in the form of heads of an Asian and a Black man. While designer Karl Mullers intent was undoubtedly to present well-known iconography for tea and sugar—a goat is also depicted on the handle of the creamer—the representations reveal the pervasiveness of racist thought in 19th-century America. Large Bowl with Floral Design Japan This bowl is an interesting example of the early Imari style of porcelain. Early Imari was the first porcelain produced in Japan, and was typically made in the blue-and-white style, in which designs would be painted on the white surface in cobalt and then covered with a transparent glaze. This bowl, however, was covered with a celadon glaze, giving the vessel a soft green color. The shape of the bowl is reminiscent of a flower, and there are floral designs painted beneath the glaze.. Date: 1785-90.This object belongs to a large dinner service (10.149.1-.248) bearing the Townley family coat-of-arms. The service, probably ordered by Justice Samuel Chase (1741-1811) of Annapolis, Maryland, displays the enamel-painted arms of Margaret Townley, Chase's aunt. This tea set with orchids has a side-handled pot called a kysu, used for steeping, straining, and serving tea. Seif Yohei III’s painting teacher, Tanomura Chokuny (1814-1907), made a visual record of famous sencha events that shows how these kinds of porcelains fit with objects such as a stove and kettle to form a complete set of utensils for tea preparation, and with ensembles of decorative objects meant to inspire creativity. The soil is partly glazed and the foot ring is trapezoidal. No oven sand has been found. The pot has a trumpeter and the lip edge is uncluded. The painting is very meticulous, however, the blue has turned gray. The interior is decorated with three flying birds with clouds and in between a schub pattern.
