Smallsized salvers, sometimes called waiters, were occasionally made en suite with flatbottomed coffeepots as protection for fine wood tables. Popular through the middle decades of the eighteenth century was the socalled piecrust border seen here. These borders were usually raised as one with the flat surface of the salver, but in this case the rim was made separately and soldered to the flat plate. A smaller salver of this type, also marked by Soumaine (35.68.4), is constructed in a similar fashion. When acquired by the Museum in 1933, this salver was said to have belonged originally to John Thurman (b. 1695), a baker and merchant who in 1720 became a freeman, an individual granted the privilege to open a retail shop, to vote, and to hold political office. An estate inventory for Thurman taken on August 18, 1778, lists a sizable collection of plate,Magnifying Glass, silver, glass, A silver hoop with molded decoration on both edges holds the lens in a groove. (3.2 x 13.8 cm). Date: late 4th century B.C..In 1895 the tomb of a Gallic warrior was excavated in a necropolis at Montefortino, about thirty miles west of Ancona in central Italy. The cemetery is that of Gauls who in the fourth century B.C. began to invade central Italy and to stage raids as far south as Apulia. The tomb contained iron weapons, bronze and terracotta vessels, and also a gold ring and five silver vessels that must have been brought as loot from another part of Italy. The hoard includes a silver jug (08.258.51), a silver bowl with swinging handles (08.258.50), a pair of stemless silver cups decorated on the inside with a complex floral pattern (08.258.52-.53), and a silver kyathos (cup-shaped ladle) with a handle that terminates in a duck's head (08.258.54). The Gui and Liting forms shown here were the most commonly imitated shapes during the Ming dynasty. These small bowls may have served as incense burners or water holders for the scholar's table.
