Sketchbook containing drawings in graphite on wove paper, 4 1/16 x 6 5/8 x 3/8 in. (10.3 x 16.8 x 1 cm). Richards first traveled to Europe in 1855, remaining abroad for a year and spending most of the time in Italy. Like so many artists before him, Richards was overjoyed to be in Florence: I have not as yet realized that I am in Italy that all the dreams of a boyhood are fulfilled.” Richards carried this small sketchbook on a walking tour in the Apennine mountains in October 1855. The carefully drawn vista shown here of the broad valley through which the Arno river winds reminded Richards, always quick to compare American and European landscape scenery, of the view of the Hudson from the Catskill Mountain House. (12.7 x 22.9 x 1.1 cm). This sketchbook served as a travel diary for the Hudson River School landscape painter Sanford Robinson Gifford during his journeys in France, Switzerland, and Italy. In this two-page spread depicting the church of Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Maggiore in Italy, Giffords precise and assured lines exemplify his skills as a draftsman. A practitioner of plein air sketching, the artist used these drawings as preparatory studies for paintings executed later in his studio. Tiger Lying in the Desert 1846 () Eugène Delacroix French Eugène Delacroix worked along side the artist Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875) on numerous animal studies between 1828-1830 in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. During this time, he studied the anatomy of cats in detail, even observing their dissections, which resulted in successul works on paper and paintings depicting tigers in the years to follow. His contemporary Théophile Gautier (1811-1872) once likened the artist to his subject matter: " He was mellow, soft as velvet, seductive as one of those tigers whose extraordinary supple grace he excelled in rendering.".
