Fragment of Molding 6th-7th century In the 500s Apa (Father) Jeremias founded a Coptic monastery at Saqqara, the ancient Egyptian necropolis (cemetery) of the city of Memphis, near the oldest pyramids. He and the earliest monks lived in tombs at the site. As the monastery grew, several grand churches with lavish decoration were built, as well as many chapels, public buildings, and complexes of cells (rooms) for each monk. The monastery continued to grow after the Arab conquest with materials from early Byzantine tomb structures being reused for additional monastic structures. Inscriptions record prayers to numerous holy figures. Sculptural elements from Saqqara are often carved with deeply undercut patterns to intensify the play of light and shadow and to mask the solidity of the architecture. Pair of Panels from a Choir Stall, c. 1330-1340. Spain, Catalonia, Monastery of Pedralbes, 14th century. Walnut; overall: 295.8 x 59.1 x 5.8 cm (116 7/16 x 23 1/4 x 2 5/16 in.). The two larger panels-shown here in a fanciful arrangement-were probably the end panels of two stalls that faced each other across the choir of a Gothic church. The third and smaller panel originated from an interior portion of one of these stalls. The first large panel is carved with the figure of St. Francis of Assisi kneeling in prayer and receiving the stigmata. Two standing figures also appear on this panel: a nun at the left (perhaps St. Claire) and a female martyr at the right. Below is St. Michael and the dragon. The second large panel depicts a seated pope, possibly Urban IV, who holds the keys of St. Peter and a book. Plaque second quarter 13th century French The medieval metalworker's craft was often closely allied to the draftsman's art, a relationship that was particularly strong in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. In this work, calligraphic metal surfaces float against colorful enameled backgrounds, much as drawing and painting interact in manuscripts. A sketch of a head on the reverse of this piece suggests that artists worked out compositions in a graphic mode before attempting completed designs.. Bronze gate ornaments showing the achievements of Ashurnasirpal II (883-859 BC) Assyrian, about 875-865 BC From Balawat, near Nimrud. These embossed bronze hands, were attached to the leaves of a door in a small palace. They show scenes of warfare, prisoner or tribute bearers brought before the king. In the lowest two registers, the king and his companions hunt lions and wild cattle.
