The Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or VOC in Dutch, literally 'United East India Company') was a chartered company established in 1602. It was also arguably the world's first mega-corporation, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, negotiate treaties, coin money, and establish colonies. Statistically, the VOC eclipsed all of its rivals in the Asia trade. The VOC enjoyed huge profits from its spice monopoly through most of the 1600s. The VOC became bankrupt and was formally dissolved in 1800.

Corbel from the Double Sepulchral Monument of Don Àlvar Rodrigo de Cabrera, Count of Urgell and Viscount of Ager and his wife Cecilia of Foix ca. 1300-1350 Catalan Documentary evidence suggests that this tomb ensemble was made for Àlvar Rodrigo de Cabrera and his wife, Cecília of Foix, the parents of Ermengol X. The monastery of Bellpuig de les Avellanes was abandoned and badly damaged during the Wars of Succession that began around 1700. When the monastery was reinhabited in the eighteenth century, the church with its burial chapel was reconstructed. The sarcophagi with the arms of the counts of Urgell and Foix were probably made at the time to fit the original effigies.. Detail from the main portal doors from the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, (more commonly called the 'Duomo'). Florence, Italy. Three huge bronze doors, adorned with scenes from the life of Madonna. They date from 1899 to 1903. Around the doors are multiple works of art: Mosaics by Niccolò Barabino, a half-relief by Tito Sarrocchi, and a series of niches and busts. The duomo was started in 1296 based on Arnolfo di Cambio's design, but was not complete until 1436 when Filippo Brunelleschi engineered the dome. One of Italy's largest churches.

Naked grimacing acrobats wrestle and pull violently at each others beards; a snarling beast proudly claims a bone. Similar mischievous, and sometimes mystifying, motifs are often found on corbels set just under the eaves of the roof on the outside of a church.Notre-Dame-de-la-Grande-Sauve, the church from which these corbels come, was situated on one of the routes to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. Set next to a great forest (the silva major from which its name comes) and dominating a hill overlooking the Gironde River, its community grew from seven monks at its founding in 1079 to some 300. The elaborately carved portal remains intact. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments.
