King David with Angels. Artist: Morazzone (Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli) (Italian, Morazzone 1573-1626 Piacenza). Dimensions: 10 7/16 x 8 11/16 in. (26.5 x 22.1 cm). Date: ca. 1625-26.The monumental seated figure of David who points downward as he receives inspiration from an angel at upper left dominates this scene; in the right background the youthful figure of an angel can be discerned playing the harp. This relatively finished, squared demonstration drawing ('modello') was preparatory for a fresco on one of the spandrels supporting the dome of Piacenza Cathedral, painted by Morazzone in 1625-26, shortly before his death. The frescoes were left unfinished by Morazzone and the remaining compartments were finished by Guercino. Among the only differences between study and finished work, the drawing omits the monumental flying figure of the angel bearing a scroll who is seen immediately below the seated David in the fresco. Men Shoveling Chairs (Scupstoel) 1444-50 Circle of Rogier van der Weyden, possibly Vranke van der Stockt Netherlandish This remarkable drawing - among the few extant fifteenth-century designs for representational sculpture - is a study for one of three narrative capitals carved for the Brussels town hall between 1444 and 1450. The subject is a pun on the word scupstoel (literally shovel chair”), a contraption used for public humiliation in which felons were raised above water and then dropped in. Scupstoel was also the name of a house that previously stood on the site of the new wing of the town hall. An inscription on the drawing’s reverse indicates that the drawing served as a patroen, a model that may illustrate an intermediary stage between the preliminary sketch and the detailed pattern used by the sculptors of the capital. Persian treatise composed by Manr ibn Muammad ibn Amad ibn Ysuf ibn Ilys, who came from a Persian family of scholars and physicians working in the city of Shiraz. His illustrated treatise, often called Manr's Anatomy (Tashr-i Manr-I), was dedicated to the sultan Ziy al-Dn Pir Muammad Bahadur, in all likelihood referring to Pir Muammad ibn Umar ibn Timur, the ruler of the Persian province of Fars from 1394 to 1409 The skeleton, viewed from behind with the head hyperextended so that the mouth is at the top of the page.
