Kuwait City, Kuwait; March 1991. An American tank (M109 Paladin 155mm self propelled tank) passes through the burning oil fields on the outskirts of Kuwait City during the Gulf War. The oil fields were set on fire by retreating Iraqi troops hoping to create some cover from American airplanes. The fires and smoke caused one of the greatest environmental disasters of modern times. Nearly 800 oil wells were set ablaze by the retreating Iraqi army and the fires were not fully extinguished until November 6, 1991, eight months after the end of the war. The fires consumed an estimated six million barrels of oil daily. Their immediate consequence was a dramatic decrease in air quality, causing respiratory problems for many Kuwaitis. The sabotage of the oil wells also impacted the desert environment, which has a limited natural cleansing ability. Un-ignited oil from the wells formed about 300 oil lakes that contaminated around 40 million tons of sand and earth.

The 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team of the Idaho Army National Guard fields an array of diverse units within its structure. As a cavalry unit the brigade features cavalry scout units throughout its organization. Cavalry Scouts engage the enemy with anti-armor weapons and scout vehicles in the field, track and report enemy movement and activities, and will direct the employment of various weapon systems onto the enemy. The training simulated emergency evacuations of sick or wounded Soldiers from a battlefield. Ground medics preformed medical care on the ground before rushing them to the flight medics aboard the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter who continued medical care while they were flown to the nearby medical facility. This training is a portion of combat training the 2nd of the 116th CAB conducted in preparation to deploy to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Spartan Shield later this year.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, STS-128 Mission Specialist Christer Fuglesang takes his turn driving an M-113 armored personnel carrier. Fuglesang represents the European Space Agency. The crew is at Kennedy for a launch dress rehearsal called the terminal countdown demonstration test, or TCDT, which includes emergency exit training and equipment familiarization, as well as a simulated launch countdown. The Idaho Army National Guards 1st of the 148th Field Artillery Regiment conducted live-fire training using the M109A6 Paladin and over 80 high explosive rounds during its annual training at the Orchard Combat Training Center, May 12 to 27, 2022. Training included its first live-fire exercise using the U.S. Armys modernized M1156 Precision Guidance Kit, a GPS smart fuze attachment, that enabled the battalion to convert its existing 155mm artillery shells into smart weapons and improve target trajectory.

More than 600 Idaho Army National Guard Soldiers, joined by Soldiers from the Montana, Oregon, Ohio and South Carolina Army National Guards, have been training in Fort Bliss, Texas, since mobilizing from Gowen Field in early August. The task force, Task Force Rattler, will deploy to Southwest Asia later this month in support of Operation Spartan Shield, where they will rotate out with 250 Soldiers from the Idaho Army National Guard as well as Soldiers from the Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Florida Army National Guards. Each rotation is approximately 12 months. Soldiers from the 118th Infantry Regiment from South Carolina National Guard and the 285th Medical Company from the Ohio National Guard are also part of Task Force Rattler, which provide the task force the ability to execute combined arms maneuvers.
