House of Fabergé (Russian, 1842-1918). Gold, silver, enamel, diamond, jade, rock crystal; overall: 10.2 x 4.5 cm (4 x 1 3/4 in.). This delicate flower study resembles a stem of wild rose. Fabergés inspiration for his flower studies is said to have come from the floral brooches of precious stones that were made in the 1700s for Catherine the Great as well as from the Japanese art of flower arranging, known as ikebana. Small and delicate, Fabergés flower studies were given as intimate gifts to friends by the tsarina and others in the court. She also liked to take them around to wherever the imperial family was residing as a reminder of spring during the harsh Russian winters.Champion's Vase (Ying-hsiung), 18th-19th century, 7 1/2 in. (19.05 cm), Pale gray-green nephrite, China, 18th-19th century, This unusual vessel, comprised of twin cylinders united by a phoenix surmounting a winged lion, is in a traditional shape that can be traced back over two thousand years. The vessel nowadays is commonly called a 'champion's' or 'hero's' vase, a pun on the words ying-hsiung, which the Chinese use to describe the vase. Numerous jade examples of this form survive from the late Sung, Yüan and Ming dynasties (13th-17th century). Reverence for past forms is typically associated with China's educated elite, and this vase demonstrates the strong revival tendencies of the Chinese artisan. Used as a decorative object, this exquisitely detailed champion's vase conveys a sense of history, tradition and cultural continuity that would have appealed to a learned owner.An obviously fragile object wrapped in paper and with a fragile stickerBootees 1840-50 American Atypical of most surviving baby shoes, the pair here is made from a patterned cotton print. The small geometric coral design is very distinctive of the 1840s, and printed cottons of this type were used extensively for women's day dresses.
