Date: ca. 1475-80.The Cloisters set of fifty-two cards constitutes the only known complete deck of illuminated ordinary playing cards (as opposed to tarot cards) from the fifteenth century. There are four suits, each consisting of a king, queen, knave, and ten pip cards. The suit symbols, based on equipment associated with the hunt, are hunting horns, dog collars, hound tethers, and game nooses. The value of the pip cards is indicated by appropriate repetitions of the suit symbol. The figures, which appear to be based on Franco-Flemish models, were drawn in a bold, free, and engaging, if somewhat unrefined, hand. Their exaggerated and sometimes anachronistic costumes suggest a lampoon of extravagant Burgundian court fashions. Although some period card games are named, it is not known how they were played. Pink-Mouth Murex (phyllonotus erythrostomus) 1640-1649 Bohemia. In the 17th century, seashells became popular collectible objects because they were considered rare and exotic. They also became common subjects for still-life paintings known as Vanitas, which symbolically represent the transience of life. The etchings of both Wenceslaus Hollar and Rembrandt van Rijn could represent the simultaneous beauty and fragility of existence. While still lifes in general are exceedingly rare in Rembrandtís work, Hollarís etching comes from a series of seashells, consisting of 38 plates. Rembrandtís shell (1938.1805) could have been inspired by Hollarís work, though Rembrandtís decision to render the shell in a three-dimensional space represents a marked difference between the two etchings.. Gull Marsden Hartley (American, 1877-1943). Gull, 1942-1943. Oil on fabricated board, 28 x 22 in. (71.1 x 55.9 cm). Near the end of his life, after spending much of his career in New York, Marsden Hartley attempted to restyle himself as a painter from Maine. He used gulls, crabs, and lobsters in his work as icons of his New England roots. A poet as well as a painter, Hartley was inspired by the tenacity of the people and the ruggedness of the landscape. He belonged to the photographer Alfred Stieglitzs circle of artists, who sought to create modern art that was spiritually rooted to the American soil. American Art 1942-1943
