How a 23-year-old Coast Guard Invader swimming away from his torpedoed transport off Guadalcanal climaxed a struggle in the water with a Jap, who wanted his life jacket, with a stiff right to the Jap's jaw, is shown in the above dramatic sketch. The Coast Guard Invader is George T. Rhodes, machinist's mate, 2/c, of Awendaw, S. C., who was serving in the Coast Guard's landing barge division. Rhodes, now in the United States, was awarded the Order of the Purple Heart for being wounded in action. The sketch is by Coast Guardsman Larry O'Toole.

The Mongol invasions of Japan of 1274 and 1281 were major military invasions undertaken by Kublai Khan to conquer the Japanese islands after the submission of Korea. Despite their ultimate failure, the invasion attempts are of historical importance, because they set a limit on Mongol expansion, and rank as nation-defining events in Japanese history. The Japanese were successful, in part because the Mongols lost up to 75% of their troops and supplies as a result of major storms at sea. These were named 'kamikaze' or divine winds by the Japanese.

An old man sits in a chair telling a tall tale to his terrified friend. Drawing on a postcard by George Ranstead, an amateur artist of the Great War who served in the Army Pay Corps. Ranstead was one of many soldiers of WWI who took up drawing as a hobby. His subjects range from wartime humour to pictures of pretty girls and are clearly influenced by images in the illustrated magazines of the period. circa 1916
