Puppies, Sparrows and Chrysanthemums, c. 1792-94. Nagasawa Rosetsu (Japanese, 1754-1799). Fusuma panel mounted as a hanging scroll; ink and slight color on paper; overall: 211.4 x 94 cm (83 1/4 x 37 in.); painted surface: 167.6 x 91.5 cm (66 x 36 in.). Rosetsu is regarded as one of the most versatile painters of 18th-century Japan. He studied in Kyoto, Japan's cultural capital, and enjoyed a successful career as an independent artist rather than as a more conservative "school" artist. Originally, these four paintings were mounted on the wall panels (fusuma) used to define room spaces in traditional Japanese interior settings. The light wood panels slide along grooves, allowing interior spaces to change with minimal effort. The round circular areas in the paintings' paper surfaces, each surrounded by a dark halo of embedded dirt and finger oils, indicate the location of the door "catches."

Sketch of a Spanish Man Edward Penfield (American, 1866-1925). Sketch of a Spanish Man, 1906. Watercolor and graphite on medium-weight, off-white, moderately textured, wove paper, sheet: 11 1/2 x 7 3/4 in. (29.2 x 19.7 cm). In these two works, Edward Penfield used controlled graphite outlines and watercolor washes to detail the tattered clothes and scruffy faces of working men he encountered during a 1906 trip through Spain. The frank realism of his approach gives his images a documentary authenticity; indeed, they were most likely studies for his illustrated travelogue Spanish Sketches (1911). While capitalizing on Americans fascination with the picturesque appeal of Spain, Penfield also endowed his subjects with a dignity reflected in their proud bearing. American Art 1906

Bamboo in Summer 1827 Takahashi Shei Japanese Takahashi Shei began studying painting with Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835), a leading literati painter and fellow native of Bungo Province (modern-day Oita Prefecture) on the far western island of Kysh. Shei first encountered Chikuden in 1822 when the master visited Shei's hometown of Kitsuki from Kyoto. Soon thereafter, Shei took Chikuden as a teacher and returned with him to Kyoto, where he was quickly recognized as one of Chikuden's most promising students. Active thereafter primarily in Osaka, Shei was so highly regarded by Chikuden that in the master's Record of Painting Teachers and Friends of Chikuden-s (Chikudens shiy garoku), he is the only of Chikuden's disciples listed alongside many senior, leading artists of the day. However, by his mid-twenties, Shei had contracted an illness that forced him to spend most of his time back home in Bungo.
