Launched on July 26, 2005 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, STS-114 was classified as Logistics Flight 1. Among the Station-related activities of the mission were the delivery of new supplies and the replacement of one of the orbital outpost's Control Moment Gyroscopes (CMGs). STS-114 also carried the Raffaello Multi-Purpose Logistics Module and the External Stowage Platform-2. A major focus of the mission was the testing and evaluation of new Space Shuttle flight safety, which included new inspection and repair techniques. Upon its approach to the International Space Station (ISS), the Space Shuttle Discovery underwent a photography session in order to assess any damages that may have occurred during its launch and/or journey through Space. The missions third and final Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) included taking a close-up look and the repair of the damaged heat shield. Wolf, seen onboard the orbital outpost here,was joined by astronaut Tim Kopra for this session, his first of three scheduled.

He was photographed by fellow NASA astronaut Christina Koch as they worked outside in the vacuum of space for seven hours and one minute to begin the latest round of upgrading the station's large nickel-hydrogen batteries with newer, more powerful lithium-ion batteries.

ISS032-E-025258 (5 Sept. 2012) --- Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Aki Hoshide, Expedition 32 flight engineer, uses a digital still camera to expose a photo of his helmet visor during the missions third session of extravehicular activity (EVA). During the six-hour, 28-minute spacewalk, Hoshide and NASA astronaut Sunita Williams (visible in the reflections of Hoshides helmet visor), flight engineer, completed the installation of a Main Bus Switching Unit (MBSU) that was hampered last week by a possible misalignment and damaged threads where a bolt must be placed. They also installed a camera on the International Space Stations robotic arm, Canadarm2. The bright sun is visible at left.

Astronaut Paul W. Richards, STS-102 mission specialist, works in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle Discovery during the second of two scheduled space walks. Richards, along with astronaut Andy Thomas, spent 6.5 hours outside the International Space Station (ISS), continuing work to outfit the station and prepare for delivery of its robotic arm. STS-102 delivered the first Multipurpose Logistics Modules (MPLM) named Leonardo, which was filled with equipment and supplies to outfit the U.S. Destiny Laboratory Module. The Leonardo MPLM is the first of three such pressurized modules that will serve as the ISS' moving vans, carrying laboratory racks filled with equipment, experiments, and supplies to and from the Station aboard the Space Shuttle. The cylindrical module is approximately 21-feet long and 15- feet in diameter, weighing almost 4.5 tons. It can carry up to 10 tons of cargo in 16 standard Space Station equipment racks. ISS014-E-13301 (4 Feb. 2007) --- Astronaut Sunita L. Williams, Expedition 14 flight engineer, participates in the second of three sessions of extravehicular activity (EVA) in nine days, as construction continues on the International Space Station. During the spacewalk, Williams and Michael E. Lopez-Alegria (out of frame), commander and NASA space station science officer, reconfigured the second of two cooling loops for the Destiny laboratory module, secured the aft radiator of the P6 truss after retraction and prepared the obsolete Early Ammonia Servicer (EAS) for removal this summer.

ISS040-E-099089 (18 Aug. 2014) --- Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev, Expedition 40 flight engineer, attired in a Russian Orlan spacesuit, participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) in support of science and maintenance on the International Space Station. During the five-hour, 11-minute spacewalk, Artemyev and Alexander Skvortsov (out of frame) deployed a small science satellite, retrieved and installed experiment packages and inspected components on the exterior of the orbital laboratory.

ISS023-E-044852 (17 May 2010) --- NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman, STS-132 mission specialist, takes a busy "self portrait" into his helmet visor while participating in the first of three spacewalks scheduled for the Atlantis crew and their Expedition 23 hosts. Though three sessions of extravehicular activity (EVA) will involve only three astronauts (two on each occasion) who actually leave the shirt-sleeve environments of the two docked spacecraft, all twelve astronauts and cosmonauts have roles in supporting the EVA work. ISS015-E-12026 (13 June 2007) --- Anchored to a foot restraint on the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) or Canadarm2, astronaut Patrick Forrester, STS-117 mission specialist, participates in the mission's second planned session of extravehicular activity (EVA), as construction resumes on the International Space Station. Among other tasks, Forrester and astronaut Steven Swanson (out of frame), mission specialist, removed all of the launch locks holding the 10-foot-wide solar alpha rotary joint in place and began the solar array retraction. Space Shuttle Atlantis docked to the station is visible at left.

STS109-E-5246 (4 March 2002) --- Astronaut John M. Grunsfeld (foreground), payload commander, is seen at one end of stowed solar panels in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle Columbia while astronaut Richard M. Linnehan, mission specialist, uses the Remote Manipulator System's robotic arm to move around at the other end. The two, participating in the first of their assigned STS-109 space walks to perform work on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), went on to replace the giant telescopes starboard solar array. Their seven-hour space walk ended at 7:38 a.m. (CST) or 13:38 GMT March 4, 2002.

ISS022-E-062843 (11 Feb. 2010) --- NASA astronaut Nicholas Patrick, STS-130 mission specialist, participates in the mission's first session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the 6-hour, 32-minute spacewalk, Patrick and astronaut Robert Behnken (out of frame), mission specialist, relocated a temporary platform from the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator, or Dextre, to the stations truss structure and installed two handles on the robot. Once Tranquility was structurally mated to Unity, the spacewalkers connected heater and data cables that will integrate the new module with the rest of the stations systems. They also pre-positioned insulation blankets and ammonia hoses that will be used to connect Tranquility to the stations cooling radiators during the missions second spacewalk.

S128-E-007689 (3 Sept. 2009) --- NASA astronaut John Danny Olivas, STS-128 mission specialist, participates in the mission's second session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 39-minute spacewalk, Olivas and European Space Agency astronaut Christer Fuglesang (out of frame), mission specialist, installed the new Ammonia Tank Assembly on the Port 1 Truss and stowed the empty tank assembly into the Space Shuttle Discoverys cargo bay.

ISS016-E-007423 (30 Oct. 2007) --- Astronaut Scott Parazynski, STS-120 mission specialist, participates in the third scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction continues on the International Space Station. During the 7-hour, 8-minute spacewalk Parazynski and astronaut Doug Wheelock (out of frame), mission specialist, installed the P6 truss segment with its set of solar arrays to its permanent home, installed a spare main bus switching unit on a stowage platform, and performed a few get-ahead tasks. Also, Parazynski inspected the port Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ) to gather comparison data for the starboard rotary joint.

ISS010-E-14763 (24 January 2005) --- Astronaut Leroy Chiao, Expedition 10 commander and NASA ISS science officer, attired in his Russian Orlan spacesuit, participates in extravehicular activity (EVA) preparations in the Pirs Docking Compartment of the International Space Station (ISS). The spacewalk is scheduled for January 26.

ISS023-E-022882 (13 April 2010) --- NASA astronaut Rick Mastracchio, STS-131 mission specialist, participates in the mission's third and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 24-minute spacewalk, Mastracchio and astronaut Clayton Anderson (out of frame), mission specialist, hooked up fluid lines of the new 1,700-pound tank, retrieved some micrometeoroid shields from the Quest airlocks exterior, relocated a portable foot restraint and prepared cables on the Zenith 1 truss for a spare Space to Ground Ku-Band antenna, two chores required before space shuttle Atlantis' STS-132/ULF-4 mission in May.

S117-E-07562 (15 June 2007) --- Astronaut Jim Reilly is photographed by a crewmate inside the spacecraft in the midst of a 7 hour, 58-minute spacewalk. Astronauts Reilly and John (Danny) Olivas (out of frame), both STS-117 mission specialists, each performed solo and shared tasks on their second and the mission's third extravehicular activity. Reilly is holding onto a handrail on the Destiny lab.

ISS035-E-037011 (11 May 2013) --- Expedition 35 Flight Engineers Tom Marshburn (pictured) and Chris Cassidy (out of frame) completed a space walk at 2:14 p.m. EDT May 11 to inspect and replace a pump controller box on the International Space Stations far port truss (P6) leaking ammonia coolant. The two NASA astronauts began the 5-hour, 30-minute space walk at 8:44 a.m.

ISS020-E-038514 (5 Sept. 2009) --- NASA astronaut John Danny Olivas, STS-128 mission specialist, participates in the mission's third and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the seven-hour, one-minute spacewalk, Olivas and European Space Agency astronaut Christer Fuglesang (out of frame), mission specialist, deployed the Payload Attachment System (PAS), replaced the Rate Gyro Assembly #2, installed two GPS antennae and did some work to prepare for the installation of Node 3 next year. During connection of one of two sets of avionics cables for Node 3, one of the connectors could not be mated. This cable and connector were wrapped in a protective sleeve and safed. All other cables were mated successfully.

S118-E-09144 (18 Aug. 2007) --- Astronauts Clay Anderson, Expedition 15 flight engineer, and Dave Williams (out of frame), STS-118 mission specialist representing the Canadian Space Agency, participate in the mission's fourth and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the 5-hour spacewalk, Anderson and Williams installed the External Wireless Instrumentation System antenna, attached a stand for the shuttle's robotic arm extension boom and retrieved the two Materials International Space Station Experiments (MISSE) to be brought back on the shuttle.

ISS022-E-025742 (14 Jan. 2010) --- Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kotov and Maxim Suraev (out of frame), both Expedition 22 flight engineers, participate in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as maintenance and construction continue on the International Space Station. During the spacewalk, Kotov and Suraev prepared the Mini-Research Module 2 (MRM2), known as Poisk, for future Russian vehicle dockings. During their STS-37 extravehicular activity (EVA), Mission Specialist (MS) Jerry L. Ross (left) and MS Jerome Apt, in the aft section of Atlantis', Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 104's, payload bay (PLB), turn and wave to their fellow crewmembers who are overseeing the activity from inside the crew compartment. During the six-hour, 30-minute spacewalk Swanson and astronaut Joseph Acaba (out of frame), mission specialist, prepared a worksite so the STS-127 spacewalkers can more easily change out the Port 6 truss batteries later this year. On the Japanese Kibo laboratory they installed a second Global Positioning Satellite antenna that will be used for the planned rendezvous of the Japanese HTV cargo ship in September. They photographed areas of radiator panels extended from the Port 1 and Starboard 1 trusses and reconfigured connectors at a patch panel on the Zenith 1 truss that power Control Moment Gyroscopes.

JSC2011-E-029127 (25 March 2011) --- NASA astronauts Michael Fincke and Greg Chamitoff (partially obscured), both STS-134 mission specialists, attired in training versions of their Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuits, are submerged in the waters of the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) near NASA's Johnson Space Center. Divers (out of frame) are in the water to assist Fincke and Chamitoff in their rehearsal, which is intended to help prepare them for work on the exterior of the International Space Station.

ISS030-E-135187 (13 March 2012) --- A fisheye lens attached to an electronic still camera was used to capture this image of Robonaut 2 humanoid robot during another system checkout in the Destiny laboratory of the International Space Station. Teams on the ground commanded Robonaut through a series of dexterity tests as it spelled out Hello world in sign language.

Fossum, STS-121 mission specialist, works in Space Shuttle Discovery's cargo bay during the mission's third and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA). The demonstration of orbiter heat shield repair techniques was the objective of the 7-hour, 11-minute excursion outside the shuttle and the International Space Station.

ISS023-E-047855 (21 May 2010) --- NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman, STS-132 mission specialist, participates in the missions third and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 46-minute spacewalk, Reisman and NASA astronaut Michael Good (out of frame), mission specialist, completed the installation of the final two of the six new batteries for the B side of the port 6 solar array. In addition, the astronauts installed a backup ammonia jumper cable between the port 4 and 5 trusses of the station, transferred a Power and Data Grapple Fixture from the shuttle to the station, and reconfigured some tools.

ISS041-E-067002 (7 Oct. 2014) --- NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, Expedition 41 flight engineer, participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as work continues on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 13-minute spacewalk, Wiseman and European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst (out of frame), flight engineer, worked outside the space station's Quest airlock relocating a failed cooling pump to external stowage and installing gear that provides back up power to external robotics equipment.

ISS015-E-31319 (27 Sept. 2007) --- Attired in a Russian Sokol launch and entry suit, astronaut Clay Anderson, Expedition 15 flight engineer, is photographed in the Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft docked to the International Space Station. The Expedition 15 crew undocked the Soyuz spacecraft from the nadir port of the Zarya module at 2:20 p.m. (CDT) and flew a short distance to the aft port of the Zvezda Service Module. Redocking occurred at 2:45 p.m. (CDT). The move was in preparation for the arrival of the new Soyuz TMA-11 capsule on Oct. 12, carrying the Expedition 16 crew and a Malaysian spaceflight participant.

SL3-122-2612 (6 Aug. 1973) --- Astronaut Alan L. Bean, Skylab 3 commander, participates in the final Skylab 3 extravehicular activity (EVA), during which a variety of tasks were performed. Here, Bean is near the Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) during final film change out for the giant telescope facility. Astronaut Owen K. Garriott, who took the picture, is reflected in Bean's helmet visor. The reflected Earth disk in Bean's visor is so clear that the Red Sea and Nile River area can delineated.

ISS040-E-099399 (18 Aug. 2014) --- Russian cosmonaut Alexander Skvortsov, Expedition 40 flight engineer, attired in a Russian Orlan spacesuit, participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) in support of science and maintenance on the International Space Station. During the five-hour, 11-minute spacewalk, Skvortsov and cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev (out of frame) deployed a small science satellite, retrieved and installed experiment packages and inspected components on the exterior of the orbital laboratory.

Satcher Jr., STS-129 mission specialist, participates in the mission's third and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the five-hour, 42-minute spacewalk, Satcher and astronaut Randy Bresnik (out of frame), mission specialist, removed a pair of micrometeoroid and orbital debris shields from the Quest airlock and strapped them to the External Stowage Platform #2, then moved an articulating foot restraint to the airlock, and released a bolt on a starboard truss ammonia tank assembly (ATA) in preparation for an STS-131 spacewalk that will replace the ATA.

S117-E-07726 (17 June 2007) --- Astronaut Patrick Forrester, STS-117 mission specialist, participates in the mission's fourth and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA), as construction continues on the International Space Station. Among other tasks, Forrester and astronaut Steven Swanson (out of frame), mission specialist, continued activation of the station's new starboard 3 and 4 (S3/S4) truss segment; checked out the Drive Lock Assembly 2, one of two mechanisms that will drive rotation of the S3/S4 Truss Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ); and removed the final launch restraints on the SARJ.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Space shuttle Atlantis STS-122 Pilot Alan Poindexter, strapped in his seat in Atlantis' cockpit, signals that he is ready to proceed with the simulated launch countdown. The exercise is part of terminal countdown demonstration test, or TCDT, activities at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The TCDT is a dress rehearsal for launch and also provides astronauts and ground crews with equipment familiarization and emergency egress training. On mission STS-122, Atlantis will deliver the Columbus module to the International Space Station. The European Space Agency's largest single contribution to the station, Columbus is a multifunctional, pressurized laboratory that will be permanently attached to U.S. Node 2, called Harmony. The laboratory will expand the research facilities aboard the station, providing crew members and scientists from around the world the ability to conduct a variety of experiments in the physical, materials and life sciences. ISS014-E-10084 (18 Dec. 2006) --- Astronaut Robert L. Curbeam Jr., STS-116 mission specialist, works with the port overhead solar array wing on the International Space Station's P6 truss during the mission's fourth session of extravehicular activity (EVA). European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Christer Fuglesang (out of frame), mission specialist, worked in tandem with Curbeam, using specially prepared, tape-insulated tools, to guide the array wing neatly inside its blanket box during the 6-hour, 38-minute spacewalk.

ISS030-E-079943 (16 Feb. 2012) --- Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, Expedition 30 flight engineer, participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) to continue outfitting the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 15-minute spacewalk, Shkaplerov and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko (out of frame), flight engineer, moved the Strela-1 crane from the Pirs Docking Compartment to begin preparing the Pirs for its replacement next year with a new laboratory and docking module. The duo used another boom, the Strela-2, to move the hand-operated crane to the Poisk module for future assembly and maintenance work. Both telescoping booms extend like fishing rods and are used to move massive components outside the station. On the exterior of the Poisk Mini-Research Module 2 (MRM2), they also installed the Vinoslivost Materials Sample Experiment, which will investigate the influence of space on the mechanical properties of the materials. JSC2008-E-041623 (20 May 2008) --- Astronauts Joseph M. Acaba and Steven R. Swanson (partially visible at upper left corner), both STS-119 mission specialists, are about to be submerged in the waters of the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) near NASA's Johnson Space Center. Acaba and Swanson are attired in training versions of their Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuits. JSC2001-E-11697 (9 April 2001) --- Astronaut James F. Reilly, STS-104 mission specialist, participates in an Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) fit check in one of the chambers in the Crew Systems Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). The STS-104 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) represents the Space Shuttle Atlantis' first flight using a new engine and is targeted for a liftoff no earlier than June 14, 2001.

JSC2002-00510 (15 January 2002) --- Astronaut Philippe Perrin, STS-111 mission specialist, wears a training version of the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) space suit during an underwater simulation of extravehicular activity (EVA) scheduled for the 14th shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Perrin, representing CNES, the French Space Agency, was joined by astronaut Franklin R. Chang-Diaz (out of frame) for the simulation, conducted in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) near the Johnson Space Center.

ISS006-E-33079 (24 February 2003) --- Astronauts Kenneth D. Bowersox (right) and Donald R. Pettit, Expedition Six mission commander and NASA ISS science officer, respectively, participate in a scheduled extravehicular activity (EVA) development test objective (DTO) in the Quest Airlock on the International Space Station (ISS). The test demonstrated the ability of two crewmembers to safely get into the American Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuit without the assistance of a third crewmember; that ability is a prerequisite to sending smaller crews to ISS while the space shuttle fleet remains grounded during the investigation of the Columbia accident. Bowersox and Pettit helped each other into their EMU spacesuits, donned jet backpacks called Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue (SAFER), set up the necessary equipment for a pre-breathe of oxygen to purge nitrogen from their bloodstreams, and then got out of the spacesuits.

S65-29730 (3 June 1965) --- Astronaut Edward H. White II, pilot for the Gemini-Titan 4 (GT-4) spaceflight, floats in the zero-gravity of space during the third revolution of the GT-4 spacecraft. White wears a specially designed spacesuit. His face is shaded by a gold-plated visor to protect him from unfiltered rays of the sun. In his right hand he carries a Hand-Held Self-Maneuvering Unit (HHSMU) that gives him control over his movements in space. White also wears an emergency oxygen chest pack; and he carries a camera mounted on the HHSMU for taking pictures of the sky, Earth and the GT-4 spacecraft. He is secured to the spacecraft by a 25-feet umbilical line and a 23-feet tether line. Both lines are wrapped together in gold tape to form one cord. Astronaut James A. McDivitt, command pilot, remained inside the spacecraft during the extravehicular activity (EVA).
