Fluorescent minerals emit visible light when exposed to ultraviolet light

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flew within 8,000 miles of dwarf planet Pluto on 14 July 2015. Our view of this cold, previously unexplored world, 4.67 billion miles from Earth, has evolved since its discovery by Clyde W. Tombaugh in 1930. This short clip shows images from Tombaugh, Hubble and New Horizons over the years, arranged to illustrate improvements in resolution. The close-up image at the end of this clip was taken about 1.5 hours before New Horizons closest approach to Pluto, when the craft was 47,800 miles (77,000 kilometers) from the surface of the planet. The image easily resolves structures smaller than a mile across.

Range 3.2 million km This image returned by Voyager 2 shows one of the long dark clouds observed in the North Equatorial Belt of Jupiter. A high, white cloud is seen moving over the darker cloud, providing an indication of the structure of the cloud layers. Thin white clouds are also seen within the dark cloud. At right, blue areas, free of high clouds, are seen.

This VIS image is located in Kaiser Crater and shows a dune field on the crater floor. The crater floor is visible between the dunes, indicating that there is a limited sand supply creating the dunes. Local winds continue to move the sand dunes across the crater floor. There are two sides to a dune, the low angle slope of the windward face and the high angle slope of the leeward side. The steep side is called the slip face. Wind blows sand grains up the low angle slope of the dunes which then fall down the slip face. In this way the whole dune moves towards the slip face. The winds blow from the windward to the leeward side of the dunes. In this image the slip faces are on the left side of the dune, so the dunes are slowly moving to the left side of this image. Kaiser Crater is 207 km (129 miles) in diameter and is located in Noachis Terra west of Hellas Planitia. Rates of change in surface temperatures during a martian day indicate differences in particle size in and near Bonneville Crater. This image is the third in a series of five with color-coded temperature information from different times of day. This one is from 1 35 p.m. local solar time at the site where NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit is exploring Mars. Temperature information from Spirit's miniature thermal emission spectrometer is overlaid onto a view of the site from Spirit's panoramic camera. In this color-coded map, quicker reddening during the day suggests sand or dust. (Red is about 270 Kelvin or 27 degrees Fahrenheit.) An example of this is in the shallow depression in the right foreground. Areas that stay blue longer into the day have larger rocks. (Blue indicates about 230 Kelvin or minus 45 Degrees F.) These false color images may reveal subtle variations of the surface not easily identified in a single band image. Today's false color image shows part of Ariadnes Colles. The term colles means hills or knobs. In this false color combination the hills stand out against the darker surrounding plains. P-34648 This photograph of Neptune was reconstructed from two images taken by Voyager 2's narrow angle camera, through the green and clear filters. the image shows three of the features that Voyager 2 has been photographing during recent weeks. At the north ( top ) is the Great Dark Spot, accompanied by bright, white clouds that undergo rapid changes in appearance. to the south of the Great Dark Spot is the bright feature that Voyager scientists have nicknamed 'Scooter.' Still farther south is the feature called ' Dark Spot 2,' which has a bright core. Each feature moves eastward at a different at a different velocity, so it is only occasionally that they appear close to each other, such as at the time this picture was taken.

Data acquired on April 13, 1994 and on October 4, 1994 from NASA's X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar on board the space shuttle Endeavour were used to generate interferometric fringes, which were overlaid on the X-SAR image of Kilauea.

NASA's Cassini spacecraft looks past Saturn's main rings to spy the tiny moon Atlas, which orbits between the main rings and the thin F ring. The main rings are closer to the spacecraft than Atlas is, and the moon appears as only a small, white dot.

Breaking the grip of the closed magnetic loops that constrain other gases around it, a spray of chromospheric material surges upward, free of the Sun. Views 1 through 5 were recorded about 5 minutes apart by Skylab and comprise a composite of separate images made in chromospheric (red), transition region (green), and coronal (blue) temperatures of an ultraviolet sequence that depicts a solar eruption. Eruption begins (view 2) as material in or near a small, compact loop develops enough energy to overcome the Sun's magnetic bonds.

A 16mm film frame shows convective regions inside silicone oil playing the part of a stellar atmosphere in the Geophysical Fluid Flow Cell (GFFC). An electrostatic field pulled the oil inward to mimic gravity's effects during the experiments. The GFFC thus produced flow patterns that simulated conditions inside the atmospheres of Jupiter and the Sun and other stars. Numbers of the frame indicate temperatures and other conditions. This image is from the Spacelab-3 flight in 1985. GFFC was reflown on U.S. Microgravity Laboratory-2 in 1995. The principal investigator was John Hart of the University of Colorado at Boulder. It was managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. (

These false color images may reveal subtle variations of the surface not easily identified in a single band image. Today's false color image shows part of Claritas Fossae. The graben filled highlands are bounded by Solis Planum to the northeast and Icaria Planum to the southwest. The linear features (fossae) are graben, a tectonic feature created when blocks of material subside between paired faults. Extensional tectonic forces are responsible for graben formation. While close to the Tharsis region, it is thought that Claritas Fossae formed prior to the large lava flows located north of this image.
