Pope Gregory VII excommunicated King Henry IV of Germany . Not wishing to bear the social results of the papal ban, Henry crossed Mont Cenis in the middle of winter to make peace. Gregory was at the castle of Canossa, high in the mountains in north-central Italy and let Henry, clad in the thin robe of a penitent (as seen here), stand in the courtyard in A.D. 1077 for three days. At length, Gregory granted Henry absolution but only on humiliating terms of submission.

The caption for this early 1900s illustration reads: Antony Offering to Crown Caesar. On the religious feast of Lupercal, one month before his death, Caesar was seated before all the people upon his ivory throne, in his robe as chief officer of the republic. Antony, just come from engaging in a religious contest and hence half stripped, stepped before Caesar and offered to place a crown upon his head. According to Greek mythology, Baucis (wife) and Phimemon (husband), an old couple who lived simply and frugally, were visited by Zeus, king of gods, and Hermes, messenger god. Unaware of who their guests really were, they entertained them with great care and as generously as they could, even to killing their last goose. Zeus then revealed himself and said he wuld grant whatever the couple wished. The two ask to die together, and so they did, become an oak tree and a linden tree that grew from the same trunk and were enertwined.
