Cleansing the Temple by Gustave Dore, 1832-1883

Jesus presented to the people during his trial, Illustration from the Dore Bible 1866. In 1866, the French artist and illustrator Gustave Dore (18321883), published a series of 241 wood engravings for a new deluxe edition of the 1843 French translation of the Vulgate Bible, popularly known as the Bible de Tours. This new edition was known as La Grande Bible de Tours and its illustrations were immensely successful.

Cosmas and Damian. They were two Christian brothers, physicians by profession, from Arabia (3rd century). They practised medicine in Cilicia, Augusta Eufratensis (near Syria), never charging the sick and healing many. They were beheaded by order of Diocletian around the year 300. As Jesus continues on his route to Calvary, a woman now known as Saint Veronica approaches to offer momentary respite. Kneeling before Jesus, she gives him linen to wipe his face of the sweat and blood from his exertions and wounds. Taking the cloth in both hands, he presses it to his face, leaving a likeness of his features, which Veronica cherished as a memorial to him. In his commentary, Tissot notes that this relic was later taken to Rome for safekeeping by the Church. European Art 1886-1894
