Sprite 1432 Sculptor/metalsmith close to Donatello Italian In 1436 a fountain was furnished for a courtyard in the Florentine house of Cosimo de' Medici, long before it was transformed into the grandiose palace of today. Records show that a stonecutter, Betto d'Antonio, supplied the fountain and a painter, Antonio, was paid for gilding a spiritello (a sprite, sometimes with angelic overtones) that surmounted it. That spiritello was almost certainly this quirky baby. Its sculptor, closely familiar with Donatello's bronze angels made for the Baptistery of Siena in 1429, breezily mixed together traits of Mercury, the god of commerce beloved by the Medici, with those of Zephyr, the west wind that Florentines always welcome in May.. Bronze statue of Eros sleeping 3rd-2nd century B.C. Greek The Hellenistic period introduced the accurate characterization of age. Young children enjoyed great favor, whether in mythological form, as baby Herakles or Eros, or in genre scenes, playing with each other or with pets. This Eros, god of love, has been brought down to earth and disarmed, a conception considerably different from that of the powerful, often cruel, and capricious being so often addressed in Archaic poetry. One of the few bronze statues to have survived from antiquity, this figure of a plump baby in relaxed pose conveys a sense of the immediacy and naturalistic detail that the medium of bronze made possible. He is clearly based on firsthand observation. The support on which the god rests is a modern addition, but the work originally would have had a separate base, most likely of stone. Allegory of Science 1865 France. In 1863 Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux received a major commission for the pedimental sculpture on the south side of the Pavillon de Flore at the MusÈe du Louvre, Paris. For this monumental work, he designed three allegorical figures of France seated on an imperial eagle (a reference to the Emperor Napoleon III), flanked by semi-recumbent nude males representing science and agriculture. Date: A.D. 251-253.This bronze monumental statue is one of the very few nearly complete Roman bronze statues of the third century preserved today. It is a reminder that many of the disembodied portrait heads displayed in these galleries were once attached to freestanding sculptures, whose original appearances were undoubtedly quite different. Portraits of the emperor served the highly important function in imperial propaganda of presenting the ruler to the public and of projecting the personality with which he wished to be perceived. Leadership and military strength are evoked in the heroic nudity of the figure and in the pose, which recalls the famous statue of Alexander the Great with the Lance by Lysippos. In contrast to the idealized body, the portrait head represents the emperor with brutish realism. Trebonianus likely would have cradled a parazonium, or short sword, in his left arm

Aquamanile in the Form of Samson andthe Lion ca. 1380-1400 Northern European (), possibly German The bearded Samson is perched on the lion's back with his knee bent as he grasps the lion's jaws in his hands. He wears a tight, fitted jacket and hose with pointed shoes, the same fashionable costume of the fourteenth century seen on Aristotle in another aquamanile in the Museum's collection. The large lion does not convey the struggle with Samson by the position of its torso or legs, but the beast rotates its head nearly 180 degrees to confront his opponent. Like Samson's hair and beard, the lion's tufted mane is vigorously engraved. Date: ca. mid-1st century B.C..This statuette is remarkable for its synthesis of Hellenistic immediacy and Classical composure. The figure can be identified as an artisan by his dress and muscular build. Particularly telling is the pair of wax tablets tucked in his belt--the equivalent of a note pad--on which he would have written or drawn with a pointed stylus. The portrait is imbued with great psychological power and may represent a famous, even mythological, figure. For example, he may portray the Homeric hero Epeios, who with Athena's help carved the Trojan horse. It has also been proposed that he is the legendary master craftsman Daidalos, who built the labyrinth at Knossos, or even the famous fifth century B.C. Date: modeled ca. 1881, carved 1907.The woman arches her torso in willful surrender to her partner, who bends at his ease to kiss her. Rodin temepered the work's overt eroticism by giving it a variety of classicizing titles. First called Zephyr and Earth and later exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1897 as Cupid and Psyche, the composition's true subject is sensuality and impassioned lovemaking. This marble version, commissioned in 1906 by the railroad investor and banker Isaac D. Fletcher, displays the soft, veiled quality of carving associated with Rodin's late marbles. This image dates to 1897 and is a copy of a statue of Laocoon and his sons. According to Greek mythology, Laocoon warned the Trojans about bringing the wooden horse fashioned by the Greeks into Troy. To quiet his protests, a god who favored the Greeks (some say Athena, others Poseidon, others Zeus) sent to sea serpents to kill him - and with him, his sons.

Song of the Wave Richard Edwin Brooks American 1895, cast 1904 The theme of the bather was prevalent in the late nineteenth century, since it gave an artist the opportunity to demonstrate expertise in modeling a nude figure, the most elevated in the hierarchy of subject matter and the mark of a well-trained academic sculptor. Here a graceful female sits on the shore, her right arm demurely crossed her chest. At the Paris Salon of 1895 Brooks exhibited a plaster statue entitled "Chant de la vague," probably an early version of this work, where it was accorded an honorable mention. He showed a similarly titled bronze statuette at the Salon of 1911; whether or not that bronze and the Metropolitans are the same object is not possible to determine, but no other casts of the sculpture have come to light. Most were made of fragile wax, clay, and plastiline (a wax- and oil-based modeling material). Many had deteriorated. Only a few were preserved in copies that had been cast from them in plaster. Except for the wax Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (Washington: NGA) none of these sculptures had been publicly exhibited during the artists lifetime.Although Degas had not favored reproducing his sculptures in more permanent materials, his heirs authorized that copies be cast in bronze in order to preserve the compositions and to sell them as finished works. Rearing Horse modeled probably ca. 1880-90, cast 1920 Edgar Degas French Upon Degas's death in 1917, more than 150 figurative sculptures were found in his studio. Most were made of fragile wax, clay, and plastiline (a wax- and oil-based modeling material). Many had deteriorated. Only a few were preserved in copies that had been cast from them in plaster. Except for the wax Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (Washington: NGA) none of these sculptures had been publicly exhibited during the artists lifetime.Although Degas had not favored reproducing his sculptures in more permanent materials, his heirs authorized that copies be cast in bronze in order to preserve the compositions and to sell them as finished works. Paul-Albert Bartholomé, a sculptor and Degas's longtime friend, prepared 72 of the figures for casting, a process executed by the distinguished Paris foundry A.-A. Hébrard et Cie. Jay (one of a pair) 1740 Meissen Manufactory German Porcelain birds have their origins in the princely tradition of maintaining collections of living animals and birds in menageries and aviaries, which were viewed as microcosms of the universe, and emblems of royal power and enlightenment. These collections often included exotic birds such as parrots, admired for their rarity, as well as more familiar native species.In 1731 the Meissen manufactory began a new genre in European porcelain, producing several hundred life-size and near-life-size porcelain birds and animals, many destined for the Japanese Palace of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony (1670-1733). To create them, factory modelers found inspiration in nature, looking both to living and stuffed specimens, as well as zoological illustrations and Asian porcelain precedents.
