Pierre de Wiessant modeled 1885, cast ca. 1900-1907 Auguste Rodin French This is a reduced version of one of the figures of the monumental group The Burghers of Calais (see 1989.407). The tension of Pierre de Wiessants twisted stance announces his conflicted state as he approaches his own demise. The left side of his body stands erect, proceeding toward the enemy English camp while his right side pivots backward, his foot dragging behind him. Terracotta askos (flask with a spout and handle) 4th century B.C. Greek, South Italian, Campanian The guttus and askos are two kinds of flask for liquids, often probably oil. In Southern Italy they may assume figural forms of some complexity. These examples show young black boys in unguarded moments. The vertical spout of the guttus has been turned into the neck of an amphora against which the boy leans dozing. The sack-like askos is transformed into a youth who subdues a duck.. Whirlwind 1896 New York City. Jonathan Scott Hartley first worked in the studio of American sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer before training in several schools in Europe. Whirlwind secured the sculptorís reputation when it was exhibited in New York in 1878. Embodying intense energy and dynamism, the female figure leans forward with her arms raised to steady herself in the wind, her legs tightly tangled in a swirl of drapery. This is a copy of the second version of the sculpture that Hartley exhibited in 1896. It is an early, rare American example of the method of bronze casting known as ìlost-waxîóa process that granted sculptors more agency in producing an accurate translation of a clay model into bronze.. A Holy Knight ( St Adrian). He stands down slightly forward with the right leg and with the curved arms for himself, the right hand keeps up. On the curly hair, which hangs on the shoulders, a beret, with a second head lid, the dependent tires for the chest are knotted. He carries a harness and mooring; From the shoulders, one of a fur collar has been provided, which is included under both arms and hangs from behind to the ground. A belt runs from the right hip until left.

Date: ca. 1250.Aquamanilia, from the Latin words meaning "water" and "hands," served to pour water over the hands of priests before celebrating Mass and of diners at table. This aquamanile, in the form of a horse and rider, exemplifies the courtly ideals of knighthood that pervaded Western medieval culture and influenced objects intended for daily use. It depicts a type of armor that disappeared toward the third quarter of the thirteenth century. Hercules and Iole, 1710-1725. Giovanni Battista Foggini. The subject tells a story of the ancient Greek hero Hercules (or Heracles). Hercules was sold to Omphale, Queen of Lydia. He became her lover and whilst in her service started to display feminine traits, wearing women's dress and spinning. The sculpture depicts Omphale with her arm around Hercules, she wears his lion skin. The arms of Hercules, and one of Omphale's arms are now missing so we can no longer be sure what they held in their hands. In the traditional depiction she is shown holding his club, whilst he holds a spindle. This subject appealed to Renaissance and Baroque artists as it could be used to explore the theme of woman's domination over man.

Bust after the Borghese Moor Probably 18th century In emulation of Nicolas Cordier Trained in Saint-Mihiel in the workshop of the Richier family, Nicolas Cordier (1567-1612, called "il Franciosino") traveled to Rome in 1592, where he lived and worked until his death in 1612. By 1600, Cordier had garnered significant attention for his talent as a marble carver and restorer of antique sculpture. Between 1607 and 1612, he created a polychrome statue, called Il Moro (Louvre, Paris), using an antique torso as a base, for Scipione Borghese, the Cardinal Nephew of Pope Paul V. The black marble head of Cordiers figure was evidently modeled after a bust of an African Man now in the Museo Nazionale Romano, tentatively dated to the second century CE. This bust was carved after Cordiers Il Moro. As such, it exemplifies the tradition of taking busts from full-length figures that was popularized in France in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In Seated Faun, Janet Scudder took as inspiration the part-human, part-goat figure found in classical mythology. One of only a handful of internationally known female sculptors in America at the time, Scudder studied in Paris and became the first woman employed at the Paris studio of the sculptor Frederick MacMonnies. She later made a name for herself crafting ornamental sculptures for the formal gardens of estates designed by the architect Stanford White. Bust of Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676).British ceramic manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood produced busts of the Dutch 17th-century heroes Van Oldenbarnevelt, De Witt and Michiel de Ruyter, as well as portrait medal-lions of Stadtholder Prince William V and his consort. Perhaps this series inspired De Mols set of smaller busts. The pedestal of this statue may have been made in the Netherlands.
