. Manjushri was venerated in China as one of the first advocates of Buddhism. On Java, he was represented as a young man with bejewelled straps across his chest. This figures missing hands may once have made the gesture of turning the wheel of doctrine(dharmacakra mudra): this symbolizes the beginning of the cycle of Buddhist doctrine and enlightenment.

Prajnaparamita, the Buddhist Goddess of Transcendent Wisdom 9th century Indonesia Esoteric Buddhist deities were favored in both Java and Sumatra, reflecting an intense interest in Vajrayana Buddhism during this period, fostered by regular contacts with monastic Buddhism in eastern India. The cult of Prajnaparamita was stimulated by the circulation of manuscript editions of the scripture personified by this goddess, the Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita. Hōnen 18th-early 19th century Japan Sitting upon a lotus pedestal is an eminent monk associated with the practice of Pure Land Buddhism, Hōnen, of the Kamakura period (1185-1333). He positions his hands one above the other, poised to grip a chain of beads designed for counting recitations of the Buddha Amidas (Sanskrit: Amitābha) name (nenbutsu). Followers of Pure Land Buddhism aim to experience birth in the realm of Amida, a paradise ideally suited for the pursuit of enlightenment. The sculpture is one of a pair, the other sculpture depicting Shandao (Japanese: Zendō) of Tang-dynasty (618-906) China. Shandaos religious thought inspired that of Hōnen, and the two are often shown together in paintings. The paintings are based upon a vision of Shandao experienced by Hōnen. In an effort to represent the Buddhas enlightenment and his inward-looking meditative nature, the artist abstracted and idealized his physical features, especially evident in the articulation of the eyes and the intersecting convex planes of his cheeks and forehead.. Bodhisattva Manjushri as Tikshna-Manjushri (Minjie Wenshu). Culture: China. Dimensions: H. 7 1/2 in. (19.1 cm); W. 4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm); D. 3 1/2 in. (8.9 cm).Manjushri holds a sword in his primary right hand and a volume of the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra (which rests on a small lotus) in his left. Remnants of a bow and arrow can be seen in his secondary hands, and the combination of the four implements identify the sculpture as a Tikshna- Manjushri, a manifestation that refers to the bodhisattva's quick wit while further elucidating his position as an embodiment of spiritual wisdom. The inscription at the front of the lotus pedestal indicates that it was cast during the reign of the Yongle emperor, who is known to have followed esoteric or Tibetan Buddhist practices and to have sponsored the production of numerous sculptures in a style derived from India and the Himalayas. . These three figures of Guanyin clearly display the elegant style of the Tang dynasty. The influence of sculpture from India inspired more animated poses, which are further accentuated by elegant ribbons.

Guanshiyin or Avalokitesvara is the bodhisattva associated with compassion as venerated by East Asian Buddhists, usually as a female. The name Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin which means 'Observing the Sounds (or Cries) of the World'. Some Buddhists believe that when one of their adherents departs from this world, they are placed by Guanyin in the heart of a lotus then sent home to the western pure land of Sukhavati. It is generally accepted (in the Chinese community) that Guanyin originated as the Sanskrit Avalokitesvara, which is her male form. Commonly known in English as the Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin is also revered in Daoism as an Immortal. In Japan, Guanyin is called Kannon.

Established by the Institute for Southern Thai Studies in 1991, this unusually good museum, set in an attractive series of Thai sala-type buildings, features a library (mainly in Thai) on southern Thai culture, and a well-documented series of exhibits on southern culture including nang talung shadow puppets, musical instruments, textiles, basketry, household artifacts, fishing equipment, jewellery and weapons. There is also a suan yaa samunprai or natural herb and medicinal garden in the well-tended grounds.
