Rakan 1688-95 Shun Genkei Japanese Rakan (Sanskrit: arhat) are ascetics who guard and proclaim Buddhist law on earth in the period between the death of Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, and the coming of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future. They have inspired some of the freest and most lively depictions of the human figure in Japanese art. Old age and the struggle for salvation have left their mark, but in the figures’ gnarled faces and bodies is a strong expression of the uniqueness of each individual.Because rakan achieved enlightenment through rigorous individual effort and meditation, they appealed to practitioners of Zen Buddhism and became a popular icon in medieval Japan. They are conventionally portrayed in groups of sixteen, eighteen, or five hundred. In devotional paintings or in sculptural groupings installed on Buddhist altars, they appear beside or around the main deity. This fierce-looking figure is Makora, one of twelve protective deities known as the Twelve Divine Generals (jūni shinshō) who accompany the Healing Buddha, Yakushi Nyorai, to whom the faithful pray for release from suffering. Each of the Divine Generals is said to represent one of twelve vows made by the Healing Buddha to heal the sick and ignorant and guide them on the path to enlightenment.

The hand is associated with action and productivity, and is considered the source of wealth, status, and success for all those who depend on manual skill and physical strength. Altars of this kind are commissioned in terracotta, wood, or brass, depending on the status of the patron.This ikegobo is an important historical document associated with the reign of Akenzua I. In the early eighteenth century, rebellious chiefs challenged Akenzua's leadership and threatened the unity and stability of the kingdom. Ehenua, Akenzua's ezomo or military commander, played a central role in defeating these forces and restoring order to the kingdom. In recognition of his heroism and service, Akenzua presented Ehenua with an ikegobo illustrating his military triu

For example, many Buddhas hold both of their hands in a gesture of exposition or teaching (vitarkamudra) that in India is confined to the right hand. Images from the related site of Prakhon Chai also exhibit this double hand gesture, but otherwise it is unknown in the Buddhist world. Another iconographic innovation was to place a standing Buddha and flanking attendants on the back of Garuda, a semi-divine winged creaturethat usually appears as the vehicle (vahana) of Vishnu. The Bodhisattva Guanyin, 7th-8th century, 6 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 1 1/4 in. (16.51 x 6.35 x 3.18 cm) (overall, including base), Gilt bronze, China, 7th-8th century, A bodhisattva is a Buddhist deity who has attained the highest level of enlightenment but delays entering paradise in order to aid other earthly beings. This small, gold-covered bronze sculpture depicts the bodhisattva Guanyin, a beloved figure among many Chinese Buddhists known for his compassion toward the suffering. Here, Guanyin is presented in the lalitasana ('royal ease') position, cast as an earthly prince to emphasize his ties to the human realm. The small bronze was likely part of an altar shrine where it was probably one of two bodhisattvas flanking a larger central image of the Buddha. A small, exquisitely cast gilt bronze altar would have been an important focal point of private devotion in this domestic setting.

Kashyapa dated 1700 Korea This standing figure in a monks robe is Kashyapa (Korean: Gaseop), the eldest of the two principal disciples of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni. His smiling face and relaxed posture convey benevolence and wisdom. According to the inscription with the votive offerings placed inside, the statue was made on the twenty-ninth day of the third month in 1700, together with a Buddha and arhat figures (Korean: nahan), at a temple retreat on Mount Duryun in Yeongam district, now part of Daeheung Temple in South Jeolla Province. The monk-sculptor Saengnan, whose works can be found today in Jeolla Province, was among the artists involved in this project.. Kashyapa 49889

. The earthenware figure is clearly based on a bronze model, such as the one alongside. The bronze figure dates from the early days of Buddhist sculpture in China. Buddhism had spread to the region a few centuries earlier, from Gandhara, an ancient kingdom in what is now Pakistan. The Gandhara influence is still evident in the robes fine, even drapery folds.

Kneeling Male Figure, 1010-1080. Cambodia, Angkor, Baphuon, Baphuon Period, 11th Century. Bronze; overall: 43.2 cm (17 in.). The third eye in the forehead indicates that this figure identified himself with Shiva, but his kneeling stance with hands raised in a gesture of adoration indicates that he is a devotee of Shiva, who has taken on aspects of the god's physical appearance. The style of the lower garment with the low-slung belt is typical of work from the so-called Baphuon period of Khmer sculpture, like the stone standing image to the left. The eyes, eyebrows, moustache, and beard were once inlaid with silver.

. Seated on the right side of the Buddha is Avalokiteshvara; the figure on his left is probably Vajrapani. The Buddha is making the gesture of teaching. Although he is dressed in a simple monks robe, he is clearly more than a monk, for his central, higher position emphasizes his special status.

Section of a Buddhist Pagoda 724 CE China. These two stone slabs originally formed the first story of a miniature Buddhist pagoda, which was elevated on a tiered base. Many such pagodas, usually standing seven or nine stories tall, are preserved from the eighth century in northern China.Now separated for display, these slabs were once tightly aligned to form one chamber whose interior was visible only though a canopied doorway cut into the front slab. Dynamic guardians, flying apsaras (heavenly beings), writhing dragons, and an ogre mask protect this doorway, which opens into a sacred space. Ikegobo are dedicated to the hand, the aspect of an individual's being associated with action and the initiation of change which is at the root of one's achievements. Depending on a patron's wealth and place within the hierarchy of the kingdom, these objects are made of brass, wood, or clay.This cast brass ikegobo was created for an iyoba, the mother of the king. Because of her position, the queen mother enjoyed many of the privileges accorded to high-ranking men, including the right to commission personal and ritual objects from brass, a costly material strictly regulated by the king. Ganesha is always invoked at the start of an enterprise, when beginning a journey for example, or starting a business. He is holding a sweet to symbolise his enormous appetite, and also good fortune. Head of the Buddha, Pakistan, Gadara, 3rd century, slate. The protuberance or topknot on the head (ushnisha) and the raised spot on the forehead (urna) are standard features of the Buddha. The wavy hair combed back from the face is characteristic of Buddha figures from Gadara. It was only during the early decades of the 1st century that first Buddha images began to appear.

Flying Apsaras (Hiten) late 11th to early 12th century Japan Apsaras, or hiten in Japanese, are flying celestial beings that accompany Buddhas. These two examples, which display apsaras riding clouds and playing musical instruments, are believed to be part of a group of twelve or fourteen that formerly adorned the mandorla of an eighty-foot-tall statue of Amida at Jōruriji, a Pure Land sect temple in Kyoto. Although the disks and flying sashes are later additions, the apsaras themselves, carved in high relief in Japanese cypress and gilt, are dated to the turn of the twelfth century, when the Amida statue was installed. These apsaras once belonged to the politician Koizumi Sakutarō (1872-1937) and then were separated for many years until they were reunited by Mrs. Burke, who acquired them separately in 1987 and 1992.. Enthroned Buddha 1923, by inscription Cambodia (probably Phnom Penh) The Buddha calling upon the earth goddess to witness his resistance of temptations immediately prior to his enlightenment (bhumisparsa mudra); he touches the earth with his right hand, a gesture that makes reference to all of his past meritorious actions. He is enthroned on a high four-tiered throne with a seat cover cloth displayed on the front. Each of the terraces is edged with lotus leaves, the upper one most pronounced.On the reverse is an undecorated cartouche containing a dedicatory donor inscription, dated equivalent to 1923 A.D. The Buddha ushnisa, denoting his enlightened state, is highlighted in gold foil as is the capping finial in the shape of a lotus bud. Both are stained red, as is the Khmer taste for gold. Nine Celestial Bodies (Navagraha), 700s. Central India. Sandstone; overall: 44.4 x 158.6 x 18.2 cm (17 1/2 x 62 7/16 x 7 3/16 in.). Near temple entrances, the nine celestial bodies were depicted in an orderly row, often in figural form. From left to right they are: Sun with a tall crown and the female Dawn in front of him. The next five figures are nearly identical: Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter. As a portent of doom, Saturn was wounded by a goddess to prevent him from moving swiftly, so he stands on one leg. The bodiless head is Rahu, the eclipse, who swallows the moon until it falls out his neck. The serpent-tailed figure is a comet.

While copper-alloy ornaments have been created in the Dogon area for almost a millennium, exact dating of these miniatures remains largely speculative, established on the basis of stylistic analysis.
