Secretary Kempthorne, joined by USGS Director Mark Myers, indicated that the USGS assessment was the first-ever resource estimate of technically recoverable natural gas hydrates, which are naturally occurring, ice-like solids in which water molecules trap natural gas molecules in a cage-like structure known as a clathrate.
