(25.3 x 34.5 cm). Date: 1608-9.This drawing is a study for one of the lunettes frescoed around 1606 by Bernardino Poccetti in the 'Chiostro dei Morti' at the Santissima Annunziata, Florence. The fresco forms part of a series of twenty five similarly shaped frescoes in the large cloister. The frescoes deal with the lives and deaths of the Servite monks. Only thirteen of the frescoes were painted by Poccetti. Others in the series were by Matteo Rosselli (1578-1650), Fra Arsenio (Donato Mascagni, 1579-1636) and by Ventura Salimbeni (1568-1613). The Metropolitan Museum owns a total of four drawings by Poccetti which are studies for the important frescoes in the Annunziata: see inv. nos. 61.178.2 (Death of Saint Alexis Falconieri), 80.3.320 (Figure Studies), and 200.91.1 (Seated Figure and Sanding Figure).T

Landscape with Figure early 16th century The Veneto This sketch is an important early example of landscape drawing in Italian art. In solitary meditation, the diminutive figure of a male saint (possibly Jerome or John) is seated in the foreground on a rocky plateau above an expansive landscape with villages along the coastline. The composition has parallels in northern Italian and northern European paintings and drawings of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century. The artists identity remains uncertain, but scholars have associated the drawing with several Venetian masters working at the turn of the sixteenth century.. Landscape with Figure 459423

Date: 1637.This rapid sketch of a Roman military triumph was intended for a fresco painting alluding to the theme of the "Age of Bronze" in the Camera della Stufa of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence that Cortona began in 1637 for Ferdinando II de' Medici. According to the account of the early history of the world given in Ovid's Metamorphoses, the Age of Bronze was thought to have been bellicose in spirit: "...ready to fly to arms savage, but not yet impious." In keeping with this Ovidian theme, the composition here is dominated at the right by an enthroned general, who from a high throne leans forward to crown the victorious soldiers of the Roman legions approaching from the left; on the lower right, nude prisoners dejectedly crouch in bondage. The Martyrdom of Saint Cecilia (Cartoon for a Fresco) 1612-14 Domenichino (Domenico Zampieri) Italian This monumental, exquisitely rendered composition is among the most significant extant cartoons (full-scale drawings) by Domenichino. It was a preparatory design for the central portion of his fresco of the Martyrdom of Saint Cecilia, painted on the left wall of the Polet chapel at San Luigi dei Francesi, the French church of Rome. Domenichino received the contract for the frescoes on February 16, 1612, from Pierre Polet (died in Rome in 1613), a prelate from the diocese of Noyon who was dedicated to the cult of Saint Cecilia. In 1599, he had attended the exhumation of her relics from a casket underneath the high altar of her titular church at Santa Cecilia in Trastevere in Rome. The Fall of Phaeton. Artist: Hendrick Goltzius (Netherlandish, Mühlbracht 1558-1617 Haarlem). Dimensions: 6 1/2 x 9 15/16 in. (16.5 x 25.3 cm). Date: late 16th-early 17th century.Phaeton, who recklessly drove Apollo's chariot through the heavens, tumbles from the shattered vehicle toward the earth. Zeus holds high a thunderbolt as he puts an end to Phaeton's rampage. This is one of at least fifty-two designs Goltzius made for an engraved series of Ovid's Metamorphoses. The engravings for the series do not display the virtuosity of his autograph works and were no doubt made by members of his workshop.The drawing exemplifies a chiaroscuro technique that Goltzius had perfected for print designs by 1588. It allowed him not only to communicate clearly to the engraver the passages of dark and light, but also to produce very finished drawings that were no doubt sold as individual works of art once they had served their purpose in the workshop.
