The Wilderness Battlefield 1864 Unknown There is still much to learn about the role of the camera during the Civil War. One day we may know more about some of the war’s most intriguing field photographs: the macabre studies of skulls and unburied bones discovered by an unknown photographer in the Wilderness battlefield where Generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant had fought to a bloody draw in May 1864. It seems likely that these photographs date from the immediate postwar period, during cleanup operations. Printed from negatives that were probably unintentionally solarized during development in the field, the photographs appear illuminated by an unearthly light and are, in part, tonally reversed: the black sky becoming an appropriate symbol for the terrible place called Wilderness, second only to Gettysburg in the number of Union killed, wounded, and missing.. African Americans of the Army of the James, digging a two hundred yard canal at Dutch Gap with shovels, Nov-Dec. 1864. The Civil War project was planned to divert the James River, that would allow Union gunboats to avoid the Confederate Battery Dantzler, as they advanced to Richmond. When General Benjamin Butler blew up the bulkheads of the excavation on New Years Day, 1865, the James River was insufficiently effected to bypass strong forts. Photo by George O. A Harvest of Death, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania July 1863 Timothy H. O'Sullivan American, born Ireland This photograph of the rotting dead awaiting burial after the Battle of Gettysburg is perhaps the best-known Civil War landscape. It was published in Gardners Photographic Sketch Book of the War (1866), the nations first anthology of photographs. The Sketch Book features ten photographic plates of Gettysburg—eight by Timothy H. OSullivan, who served as a field operator for Alexander Gardner, and two by Gardner himself. The extended caption that accompanies this photograph is among Gardners most poetic: "It was, indeed, a ‘harvest of death... Such a picture conveys a useful moral: It shows the blank horror and reality of war, in opposition to its pageantry. Here are the dreadful details!
