Major General George Thomas, called the 'Rock of Chickamauga' for concentrating scattered Union units at Horseshoe Ridge after the Federal right wing was routed. They fought until the battle ceased at nighttime on Sept. 19, 1863, when they withdrew north, joining the rest of the army in Chattanooga (BSLOC_2018_9_48)

Union Major General William Rosecrans, commanded and won important US Civil War battles: Rich Mountain, Virginia; 2nd Corinth, Mississippi; Battle of Stones River (Murfreesboro, Tennessee). When he failed to win the Battle of Chickamauga, he was relieved of command and placed in charge of the Department of Missouri until the war's end (BSLOC_2018_8_15)

Admiral David Farragut, served in the US Navy from 1810 until his death in 1870. He fought in the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the US Civil War. Confederate General Nathan Evans, commanded a small brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861. His 900 soldiers slowed the Union advance on the Confederate flank, from Matthews Hill. This allowed the Confederates to regroup on nearby Henry Hill. When fresh reinforcements soon arrive, the Union troops were forced into a disorganized retreat (BSLOC_2018_6_150)

John Milton Chivington led a 700-man force of the Colorado Territory militia in the massacre at Sand Creek on Nov. 29, 1864. They murdered between 150 and 200 Indians nearly all women and children, prompting Native American retaliation and anti-military public opinion against a general war on Plains Indians (BSLOC_2019_9_93)
