A group of men stand next to wagons labeled 'Sam A. Cooley U.S. Photographer Department of the South'. There is a camera on the left, and two African American drivers. Photographer Cooley moved from Hartford, CT, to Beaufort, SC, before the war. Cooley lived in Beaufort, when it was captured by the Union during the Battle of Port Royal in Nov. 1861. Because he was in an occupied zone, and worked for the Union army, he could obtain photographic materials unavailable to other southern photographers (BSLOC_2019_2_127)
