After hunting (après la chasse). In an Italian landscape, some hunters, dressed in first name costume, stop at the ruins of an antique Roman building. A young beggar, sitting next to one of the columns, has a hat in his hand hope to receive alms. In the foreground a boy is in a red yacht suit in bright light for a monumental gate. He is accompanied by three dogs. In his hands he holds a collapsed jungle net. A blue yacht bag and the catch of the day - a hare, a heron and two patriences - are at his feet.

In the pitch black of night, two groups of men are gathered in a forest. To the left, travelers apprehensively pause to watch a magician conjure terrifying apparitions. Since the Middle Ages, necromancy, the act of communing with the dead, was associated with male sorcerers. In Rosa's painting, the wizened necromancer who stands tall and resolute directly below a classical column is reminiscent of Moses, a predecessor to Renaissance depictions of sorcerers. Rosa's learned magicians not only invoke associations with philosophers and intellects, but they would have also referred to the artist himself and the intellectual elite with whom he associated in Florence. Washerwomen in the Ruins of the Colosseum Hubert Robert (French, 1733-1808). , ca. 1760s. Oil on canvas, 17 3/4 x 22 3/4 in. (45.1 x 57.8 cm). In this painting, Hubert Robert combined real and imagined architecture: the recognizable pierced walls of Romes Colosseum looming over the coffered arches of another decaying structure. A group of washerwomen and other figures gather around a fire, providing a picturesque contrast between ordinary lives of the present day and the lost grandeur of antiquity. In 1754 Robert had traveled to Italy to further his artistic training and soon found himself captivated by the crumbling ruins of ancient monuments. During his eleven-year stay in Italy, Robert assembled a vast “catalogue” of drawings of such sites, which he would later include in historically evocative fantasy scenes that earned him both patronage and acclaim. Vaprio d'Adda 1744 Bernardo Bellotto Italian By carefully staging the sunlight hitting the facades rising above the Adda River, Bellotto picks out the village of Canonica d'Adda at the right and Vaprio at the center. Located northeast of Milan, Vaprio was the site of Villa Melzi, where Leonardo da Vinci visited his pupil Francesco Melzi. On related drawings, Bellotto noted that this painting and its pendant were made in 1744 for Count Simonetta in Milan.
